Historia
In a remote Polish village, Janina devotes the dark winter days to studying astrology, translating the poetry of William Blake, and taking care of the summer homes of wealthy Warsaw residents. Her reputation as a crank and a recluse is amplified by her not-so-secret preference for the company of animals over humans. Then, a neighbor, Big Foot, turns up dead. Soon, other bodies are discovered, in increasingly strange circumstances. As suspicions mount, Janina inserts herself into the investigation, certain that she knows whodunit. If only anyone would pay her mind....

Historia
Edwin St. Andrew is eighteen years old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. He enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and suddenly hears the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal—an experience that shocks him to his core.

Superb
Revisado: 04-07-22
I have enjoyed at least 3 of Mandel's prior novels and this one is maybe the best. I was transfixed. It all comes together toward the end. I rarely write reviews but I have to this time - even the narration is perfect.

Historia
In this vivid and compelling narrative, the Seven Years' War - long seen as a mere backdrop to the American Revolution - takes on a whole new significance. Relating the history of the war as it developed, Anderson shows how the complex array of forces brought into conflict helped both to create Britain's empire and to sow the seeds of its eventual dissolution. Beginning with a skirmish in the Pennsylvania backcountry involving an inexperienced George Washington, the Iroquois chief Tanaghrisson, and the ill-fated French emissary Jumonville, Anderson reveals a chain of events that would lead to world conflagration.

A fine, fine history book!
Revisado: 12-11-21
This book was superb! I'd wanted to read it since it came out but just never did. It was fabulous. It is kind of for historians or history buffs or people who really do enjoy reading history including a lot of military and political history. Woodson gave the book an excellent reading.

Another 5!
Revisado: 11-18-21
Another lovely book in the series and the narrator, Bianca Amato is perfect. The little plots are compelling without losing the cozy feel of the book. The characters continue to talk and behave true to form with Precious and J. L. B. Matekoni gaining some texture. Keep these treasures coming! (I've read all of the books in order in one form or another since the first one in 1998 - they're still magic. - I recommend reading in order because the characters drive the story.)

Historia
Attorney Garrett Goodlove thought that after his firm brought in a multi-million-dollar settlement, the depression he'd been fighting would disappear. That didn't happen. Because he no longer has to struggle to keep Goodlove and Shek afloat, he has too much time to obsess over his moods. When a new client brings in an envelope labelled "Open only if something happens to me", Goodlove puts it in the firm's safe and goes back to neglecting his practice. But when the client disappears, Goodlove knows he must overcome his problem and take charge. But beating depression is hard.

Another one!
Revisado: 10-23-20
I really enjoy the Goodlove and Shek series for the setting, the complex puzzlers, the legal play and dramatic courtroom action as well as more of the company of Garrett Goodlove and his crew. Nick Sullivan's narrations is wonderful. I would advise the books be read in order because in a series there tends to be an over-arching plot which works on developing characters and their relationships.

Historia
Born into slavery, Henrietta Wood was taken to Cincinnati and legally freed in 1848. In 1853, a Kentucky deputy sheriff named Zebulon Ward colluded with Wood's employer, abducted her, and sold her back into bondage. She remained enslaved throughout the Civil War, giving birth to a son in Mississippi and never forgetting who had put her in this position. By 1869, Wood had obtained her freedom for a second time and returned to Cincinnati, where she sued Ward for damages in 1870. Astonishingly, after eight years of litigation, Wood won her case: In 1878, a Federal jury awarded her $2,500.

The true story of a slave woman who was freed and then snatched and enslaved again only to be released with the eventual ending of the Civil War is a good one in itself, but McDaniel, the author, adds so much US history that it's a marvel. It won the Pulitzer in history for a reason.

A Romance!
Revisado: 07-30-20
I was tricked into thinking this book was a mystery and it has that aspect but ... no. It's a romance. And a dreadfully cliched one at that. This is one the of worst books I've listened to on Audible and I've listened to a LOT. Maybe romance readers would enjoy it but please. Don't buy it expecting a normal crime novel - that's part of the setting I think.

Becoming Duchess Goldblatt is two stories: that of the reclusive real-life writer who created a fictional character out of loneliness and thin air, and that of the magical Duchess Goldblatt herself, a bright light in the darkness of social media. Fans around the world are drawn to Her Grace's voice, her wit, her life-affirming love for all humanity, and the fun and friendship of the community that's sprung up around her.

I loved the book. I wanted to curl up and just enjoy all day and not let it end. I read along with the Audible to get the effect of the Twitter feeds but it's not really necessary. This book just leaves a soft happy place in my heart. Perfect for quarantine times.

Historia
Attorney Garrett Goodlove never thought he'd prosecute a medical malpractice case. Doctors swear an oath to help people, and those cases are usually honest mistakes blown up by ambulance chasers. But when he learns of a woman bodybuilder who went into the ER with a case of heartburn and came out in a wheelchair, he starts paying attention. It appears the doctor who saw her frequently orders open-heart surgery for patients who don't need it, sometimes leading to disability or death.

Terrific!
Revisado: 05-31-20
I've now read all three of Macy's Garrett Goodlove series and totally look forward to the next one. They're not "cozy" but only because they hit on some ugly and often difficult real life problems. I suggest reading them in order because there is a background arc which progresses through them.
