Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Wow! I’ll be reading this again and again
Revisado: 02-06-25
There is so much to be unpacked, applied, absorbed. Appreciated. Why isn’t this all commonly implemented everywhere? This will advance self love and relief of trauma widely. It’s going to be the recommendation I make to everyone.

Expanding the world and not to a little boy!
Revisado: 11-23-24
I assumed Alexander was a boy and was pleasantly surprised when I realised he was not! I really like that the catwings’ world expanded in this. Again some lovely emotional journeys and again nice adventure included.

Historia
Ursula K. Le Guin wrote this highly acclaimed novel about a very special litter of kittens. Mrs. Jane Tabby has always longed toget away from the cramped alleys of the city. She knows it is too late for her, but she thinks her longing may be the reason her litter of kittens was born with wings. When they are old enough to fly, she sends the four kittens, who become known as catwings, out into the world to find their home. But they find that danger does not lurk only in city alleyways.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

A “must listen” book!
Revisado: 08-02-24
By the time I’d gotten through just two of the thirty chapters of this book, I had been chuckling several times by humour so smartly woven into science and conversation that I already knew the book would be delightful. I loved how Weir gave us Easter eggs in space by casually referencing sci-fi and pop culture stories that gave me extra delight when I spotted them!
It was complex, heavy on adventure, space and sci-fi but so very warm and funny and human at the same time. My favourite book in a long time.

I wanted the full books. These are not!
Revisado: 07-28-24
Disappointed because I thought I was buying the full books. That this was abridged should have been made clear.
Returning and will find full versions now, though I am sad that immersing in bits of the story in this edition will spoil the adventure when I dove into the full books, now.

It’s 1979. Olivia Murray, a secretary at a Los Angeles newspaper, is determined to become a photojournalist and make a difference with her work. When opportunity arrives, she seizes it, accompanying her Kurdish boyfriend, Delan, to northern Iraq for a family wedding, hoping to capture an image that lands her a job in the photo department. More important, though, the trip is a chance to understand Delan’s childhood and bridge the differences of their pasts. Yet when the return home proves less safe than Delan believed, Olivia is confronted with a reality she had not expected.

A painting of this people’s turmoil, love, loss and hope
Revisado: 05-26-24
This was such a patiently and beautifully rendered portrait of life for these people. The author reflected the extremes of emotion, customs, and resilience that was more impactful because it never went overboard by preaching to the reader. Instead, it simply presented what felt like true events and left the elements there for the reader to recognize group and personal fear, hate, love, and resilience. I’ve come away with much to reflect on and gratitude for the chance reading of this beautiful book.
It’s worth mentioning that, even though I consider the book 5 stars, the acknowledgments somehow had an impact that was just as big, because it gave me a peek into the strong, loving people and lived experiences who lay foundations for the book decades before it was written.

Powerful, inspiring story; excellent narration
Revisado: 05-16-24
I have read several books with themes of slavery, emancipation, subjugation, uprising, hope, resilience, and freedom. However this ranks near the top of the list.
It felt so real, and I could see the migration and sense how heartbroken the characters felt as various events upended their lives again and again.
The setting in the Caribbean is less common than setting stories in the US, but it resonated with me even more, because of how fractured families were due to the forced migration of slaves from island to island.
Highly recommended!

Buy the physical book. Narration distracts from useful message.
Revisado: 05-07-24
The narrator was lazy and slurred his words, pronounced things wrongly and pauses at places that confuse the listener. He detracted from what I feel could have been a useful book. As it is, I’m unable to go past chapter 2.
