A single annoying quirk of the reader made this a difficult listen
Revisado: 04-29-25
(+) Great Woodhouse humor, and quite a few stories for one credit!
(-) Very odd performance, with occasional pauses in the middle of sentences and subclauses that interfere with the enjoyment one would otherwise get from the crisp enunciation and the effort the reader puts into performing different characters. If it doesn't bother you, you're in luck and should grab this title quick. But do listen to a sample first.

Historia
Tommy Phan is a successful detective novelist living the American dream in Southern California. One evening he comes home to find a small rag doll on his doorstep. It’s a simple doll, covered entirely in white cloth, with crossed black stitches for the eyes and mouth, and another pair forming an X over the heart. Curious, he brings it inside. That night Tommy hears an odd popping sound and looks up to see the stitches breaking over the doll’s heart. And in minutes the fabric of Tommy Phan’s reality will be torn apart. Something terrifying emerges from the pristine white cloth....

Not my cup of tea
Revisado: 11-17-23
Koontz was just a name for me until last week when I heard and adored some advice he gave on writing..So I gave this a try when I found it in a 2-for-1 sale, Perhaps you should take my review with a pinch of salt, because this isn't a genre I normally read.
The characters seemed dull and stereotypical; and the (quite interesting) premise was not developed fast enough in any way that held my interest. I got about halfway and bailed.
Hoping an author with such admirable convictions has better work out there.
The performer was fine,, except for the extremely annoying "voice" he chose for the female lead. I wish solid professionals like this were allowed to simply read the book. Are we all in kindergarten that we need characters voiced differently?

could not stay awake
Revisado: 09-12-23
Decent story, though not as good as some Sanderson wrote later. I mean to finish it by purchasing the book. The performer's cadence never seems to vary, even as he voices different characters. I started listening 25-30 times and all I can say is this is a good audiobook to fall asleep to.

Historia
In 1930, young Archie Goodwin comes to New York City hoping for a bit of excitement. In his third week working as a night watchman, he stops two burglars in their tracks - with a pair of hot lead slugs. Dismissed from his job for being “trigger-happy”, he parlays his newfound notoriety into a job as a detective’s assistant, helping honest sleuth Del Bascom solve cases like the Morningside Piano Heist, the Rive Gauche Art Gallery Swindle, and the Sumner-Hayes Burglary. But it’s the kidnapping of Tommie Williamson that introduces Goodwin to the man who will change his life.

Awful
Revisado: 07-08-22
I keep giving Goldsborough a try in case his characters start to resemble Stout's creations. They do not, but some of his books are tolerable as independent stories involving characters that happen to share those names.
This one is not (tolerable). Contrived, clunky dialogue. Decent premise that got very boring very fast.I gritted my teeth for three chapters and then gave up.

My ideal sleep aid
Revisado: 04-26-22
The content is well chosen and varied. The narrator does have a distinct cadance, but it absolutely works for ne. If you want to listen to the story, you can, because itt nakes perfect sense: the monotone and little pauses do not in any way interfere with the stories being perfectly intelligible. if you stop paying attention, it lulls you to sleep, which would have been impossible if the reading was less monotone. As a lifelong severe insomniac. I do appreciate this podcast. Thank you.

Historia
When the Knight Bus crashes through the darkness and screeches to a halt in front of him, it's the start of another far from ordinary year at Hogwarts for Harry Potter. Sirius Black, escaped mass-murderer and follower of Lord Voldemort, is on the run - and they say he is coming after Harry. In his first ever Divination class, Professor Trelawney sees an omen of death in Harry's tea leaves... But perhaps most terrifying of all are the Dementors patrolling the school grounds, with their soul-sucking kiss...

Best book of the series
Revisado: 10-30-21
There is still that hyper-annoying overabundance of adverbs, especially as dialogue tags, which is the bane of all Harry Potter books. But otherwise I feel like this one works on all levels as a story, and it has long been my favorite. The performance is superb - Dale has finally won even my heart; I'll go so far as to say he ties with Stephen Fry this time! (I've fallen hard for his rendition of Lupin.) If a friend was to buy a single volume in the series as an audiobook, this is the one I would recommend.

Historia
Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

Stephen Fry does so much better with the HP books, no idea why Audible does not carry that version.

Historia
On a dark, wintry day, Eliza Grey receives a mysterious letter from her ailing Nana Mora begging her to come for a visit. This is an easy "Yes". Eliza has always preferred Nana Mora's beach cottage on St. Simons Island to the apartment she and her mom call home in the city. The island is a magical place where stories and legends grow as thick as the Spanish moss dangling in the trees. Now, Nana Mora's eyesight is fading, and there's something she wants to show Eliza before it’s totally gone: a mythical place locals refer to as Sirens Harbor.

unspeakably boring
Revisado: 07-26-21
One narrator is okay, the other saccharine/annoying. The story left me cold and I bailed halfway. It might appeal to very young audiences who also happen to be quite patient.

Wheaton makes a formulaic book brilliant
Revisado: 07-15-21
The story is so-so, possibly a bit more fun for those of us who enjoyed the 80s, competently written, certainly not memorable, but a decent way to kill some time. Will Wheaton's delivery, though, elevates it - the humor, the adventure, the romance all become much more personal; you end up liking and rooting for the main character(s), and I for one am off to check which other audiobooks he has performed.
