Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Product placement?
Revisado: 06-08-24
I was finally willing to accept the clear lack of research into the medical stuff when King throws in blatant product placement. NOPE. return.

Historia
A plucky farm boy will find more than he's bargained for on his quest to awaken the sleeping princess in her cursed tower. First there's the Dark Lord, who wishes for the boy's untimely death...and also very fine cheese. Then there's a bard without a song in her heart but with a very adorable and fuzzy tail, an assassin who fears not the night but is terrified of chickens, and a mighty fighter more frightened of her sword than of her chain-mail bikini. This journey will lead to sinister umlauts, a trash-talking goat, and the Dread Necromancer Steve....

Delightful and promising
Revisado: 11-20-21
I don’t hand out 5 stars casually, these authors earned it. Think slightly sillier American version of Discworld meets Princess Bride, though I’d argue they speak with their own unique voice in this first book, not simply copying Pratchett’s formula. It looks like a very promising setting for future books. You did great you two, now don’t duck it up!

Historia
24/7 Demon Mart: Publisher's Pack features two books from the 24/7 Demon Mart series: The Graveyard Shift, book one, and Monster Burger, book two. It also includes the bonus Hell for the Holidays, a 24/7 Demon Mart Christmas special. Lloyd Wallace is the most clueless crossing guard the intersection of hell and earth has ever seen. So clueless, that he doesn't even realize the beer cave in the corner store where he works is the gateway to hell.

A truly unpleasant experience
Revisado: 11-06-20
Bad writing and the narrator has a very irritating voice. Don't care how good a deal it is, it's not worth it.

Meet the ultra-rational Dr Newton Barlow. Cool, cynical, scientific, he’s the last man you’d want to be a bridge between the living and the dead. But with his academic reputation in tatters, and nothing to lose but his few remaining marbles, the great skeptic is about to discover that the past that haunts him will be nothing compared to his ghost-ridden future.

Technically well written, but not engaging
Revisado: 10-08-20
First and foremost, this author's writing bears no resemblance to the brilliant humor of either Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams (the claim made in the Audible advertising). The claim makes even less sense because the book doesn't try to be funny aside from a handful of jabs at reality TV and mocking an effeminate man. The former did make me smile a bit, the latter comes off as plain old homophobia/misogyny from the author.
It's mildly entertaining. Clearly the author's passion is shown in a love of how science works. This passion is unfortunately lacking in how history works. People 500 years in the past act with the same pragmatics and motivations as those today.

Pandemonium: a twilight dimension of nightmare creatures, mythical beings, the undead, and everything in between. To Dead Jack, it’s hell sweet hell. In the first book of the series, the tortured, drug-addicted detective and his associate, the homunculus Oswald, face rogue leprechauns, ghost pirates, a sex-obsessed shark woman, sycophantic ghouls, an insecure fire demon, and a goateed maniac who calls himself the Duke of Pandemonium.

Rough stuff
Revisado: 09-06-20
As an aficionado of badly written horror-comedy, I have a lot of tolerance for stumbling in a writer's first novel. This tolerance allowed me to get through this book. Sorry to say there aren't many redeeming qualities to be found further along. Whatever potential might be there is killed off by plot holes and neutered swear words. It might have been readable with a major revision. Whoever published this should feel ashamed.

Historia
Charged with gross incompetence, Satan is fired from his job as prince of Hell and exiled to that most terrible of places: English suburbia. Forced to live as a human under the name of Jeremy Clovenhoof, the dark lord not only has to contend with the fact that no one recognizes him or gives him the credit he deserves but also has to put up with the bookish war-gamer next door and the voracious man-eater upstairs.

Good Omen-esque Fun
Revisado: 05-07-20
I've ignored this book showing up on my list of 'books you may like' for awhile; I tend to ignore anything with such a cheap looking cover. But I was missing out, this is a smart and funny novel about Satan's new life on Earth. It's a bit more edgy than Good Omens, but not by much, being British and all.

Historia
The Ancient Egyptian gods have defeated all the other pantheons and claimed dominion over the earth, dividing it into warring factions. Lt. David Westwynter, a British soldier, stumbles into Freegypt, the only place to have remained independent of the gods’ influence. There, he encounters the followers of a humanist leader known as the Lightbringer, who has vowed to rid mankind of the shackles of divine oppression. As the world heads towards an apocalyptic battle, there is far more to this freedom fighter than it seems.

So bad it's....really bad
Revisado: 04-19-20
the writing is pretty bad...also the plot...also the narrator has a much too friendly Midlands accent for a military sci-fi. Overall, maybe hold off on this one and see if things improve in the later books.

Historia
This panoramic fictional oral history begins with one small mystery: the body of a young woman found in an Arizona border town, presumed to be an illegal immigrant, disappears from the town morgue. Soon, the US government - and eventually biomedical researchers, disgruntled lawmakers, and even an insurgent faction of the Catholic Church - must come to terms with what they're too late to stop: an epidemic of vampirism that will sweep first the United States, and then the world. With heightened strength and beauty and a steady diet of fresh blood, these changed people, or "Gloamings", rapidly rise to prominence in all aspects of modern society.

Promising idea, poorly executed
Revisado: 03-31-20
The author must have gotten some very crappy advice, that the book was ready to be published when it needed a thorough rewrite. Every cardinal sin is committed, though the worst are the constant and unnecessary flash backs/forwards. Despite the plot holes and (ending?), the idea is a good one. Here's hoping the author hires a better editor and spreads the material over a series.

Blow by blow military novella
Revisado: 01-05-20
This is the required ultramarine side of the story opposite 'Unburdened'. Unlike 'Unburdened', there is little plot beyond moment by moment descriptions of battle...for 5 hours. The most boring w40k I've encountered so far. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Historia
Unaware of the wider Heresy and following the Warmaster's increasingly cryptic orders, Roboute Guilliman returns to Ultramar to muster his Legion for war against the orks massing in the Veridian system. Without warning, their supposed allies in the Word Bearers Legion launch a devastating invasion of Calth, scattering the Ultramarines fleet and slaughtering all who stand in their way. This confirms the worst scenario Guilliman can imagine - Lorgar means to settle their bitter rivalry once and for all.

A good addition
Revisado: 12-27-19
A good tactical military sci-fi novel on its own and a must for Horus Heresy fans. The author does a good job keeping things interesting. There's a bit of a narrative stumble in the epilogue, so feel free to skip it and you'll have a better experience.
