Historia
The year is 1920: Flying in the face of convention, legendary American adventuress Beryl Helliwell never fails to surprise and shock. The last thing her adoring public would expect is that she craves some peace and quiet. The humdrum hamlet of Walmsley Parva in the English countryside seems just the ticket. And, honestly, until America comes to its senses and repeals Prohibition, Beryl has no intention of returning stateside and subjecting herself to bathtub gin.

really liked the narration

liked the narration. the setting was wonderful. caught the claustraphobia and class conciousness of a small village well but reactions seemed a bit anachronistic compared with writers of the period. and in mysteries there are many. characters were fun but thin. would read more if there is a series to see how it develops.

After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

loved the narrator
Revisado: 02-26-18
im a sucker for a Brit accent. but he was droll and did well with all of the foreign names. the story was very entertaining and a good meditation on the difference between trying to do what is right and doing what is legal. Not to mention how politics and pessimism can ruin a perfectly good dinner. There is an element of Chauncey Gardner in Alan but he is both brighter and more proactive, which makes him more fun.

I really like the work of an hour later. At 1st it seemed odd to have a man telling the story. But obviously once I appreciated who the narrator was, it made more sense. He did a wonderful job with the Voices. I found the story interesting's. It was very well researched and the history of the courts and the roles that the women played were fascinating. On the other hand, of the plot was not as compelling as I would have hoped.

In this much-anticipated second installment of Neve Maslakovic’s time-travel series, St. Sunniva University’s Julia Olsen and Nate Kirkland find themselves hot on the trail of a 14th-century artifact, a missing runic specialist, and an all-too-familiar kidnapper who has used the time travel lab’s STEWie (SpaceTimE Warper) for a joyride deep into America’s past. Armed with nothing more than a hunch and a keen understanding of History’s rules, can Julia, Nate, and their teammates track down the kidnapper and the missing researcher before the inevitable - and perilous - clash with history?

Diverting
Revisado: 10-01-17
The author knows a lot about history and academia and, I think, owes a debt to Connie Willis. she also has a sense of humor and a narrator who stands in very well for the first person narrator in the book. Not compelling, in a compuldive page turning, stay up all night kind of way, but definitely good entertainment.

Historia
We are accustomed to think of sociopaths as violent criminals, but in The Sociopath Next Door, Harvard psychologist Martha Stout reveals that a shocking 4 percent of ordinary people, one in 25, has an often undetected mental disorder, the chief symptom of which is that that person possesses no conscience. He or she has no ability whatsoever to feel shame, guilt, or remorse. One in 25 everyday Americans, therefore, is secretly a sociopath.

Compelling if sometimes academic
Revisado: 07-31-17
This book is by a psychologist who has a passion to understand the sociopath, how she or he presents to the world and the damage that can result. What is scary is how recognizable the sociopath is. Most of us have crossed paths (and, if we lucky, have only crossed paths with at least one). I won't say I enjoyed the book but it was fascinating and the narration was engaging.

There are angels, and they are not beneficent or loving. But they do watch over us. They watch our lives unfold, analyzing us for repeating patterns and redundancies. When they find them, the angels simplify those patterns and remove the redundancies, and the problem that is "you" gets solved.

enjoyed the performances
Revisado: 10-14-16
The language and the performances were riveting. it was a book I was glad I listened to and one I wouldn't have discovered but for a daily deal. But the story itself was less satisfying. I didn't quite get the narrative arch.

Historia
It was the 1960s - a time of economic boom and social strife. Young women poured into the workplace, but the “Help Wanted” ads were segregated by gender and the “Mad Men” office culture was rife with sexual stereotyping and discrimination. Lynn Povich was one of the lucky ones, landing a job at Newsweek, renowned for its cutting-edge coverage of civil rights and the “Swinging Sixties.” Nora Ephron, Jane Bryant Quinn, Ellen Goodman, and Susan Brownmiller all started there as well. It was a top-notch job - for a girl - at an exciting place. But it was a dead end.

I liked the story. informative and we'll written. it caught a moment in history. The narration was very hard to listen to, like a computerized robo-call voice. I finally sped up the narration so I could just get through it.
