On a hot day in Bethlehem, a 12-year-old Palestinian-American girl is yelled at by a group of men outside the Church of the Nativity. She has exposed her legs in a biblical city, an act they deem forbidden, and their judgement will echo on through her adolescence. When our narrator finally admits to her mother that she is queer, her mother's response only intensifies a sense of shame: "You exist too much," she tells her daughter. Told in vignettes that flash between the US and the Middle East, we trace her progress from blushing teen to sought-after DJ and aspiring writer.

Narrator is distractingly bad

Meh - didn't care about the character in the end

I didn't even finish this book - I think I'm about 30 min away from the end. I just lost interest in the deeply flawed character and her endless broken relationships. It just feels like reading someone's personal journal and is not that interesting to an outsider. Maybe I don't identify with the way the character views love? Didn't mind the narrator as others did.

A book for 20-somethings, but not me

Good first half, second drags and is unfocused

I really enjoyed the first half. There were a few lessons that seemed obvious but I enjoyed hearing them in a more nuanced form. I re-listened in a couple of sections.
However, as a lot of other listeners noted, the second half just dragged on and on, and I really felt like the advice was kinda recycled, and pat.
I would recommend listening to the first half and then skipping the second once you get bored.

Fascinating story, annoying narrator

Fascinating story, sometimes it dragged a tad, but overall I binged this in 3 days.
Note to the narrator: bro, stop with the "female" voice impressions. It's annoying, distracting, INSULTING and also inappropriate considering Elizabeth's well known "baritone" speaking style.
Otherwise, the narration was fine.
