Historia
It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever.

A bit too much Harlequin romance, but good nonetheless. Long, but not tedious. Recommended.

Historia
Everywhere hailed as a masterpiece of historical adventure, this enthralling narrative recounts the experiences of 12 American sailors who were shipwrecked off the coast of Africa in 1815, captured by desert nomads, sold into slavery, and subjected to a hellish two-month journey through the bone-dry heart of the Sahara. The ordeal of these men - who found themselves tested by barbarism, murder, starvation, death, dehydration, and hostile tribes that roamed the desert on camelback - is made indelibly vivid in this gripping account of courage, brotherhood, and survival.

I read and listen to history and often books/stories that would put others to sleep. I don't think I have every fast-forwarded through an audiobook before, but we skipped ten chapters in this. It is crying for an editor who would skip the repetitive camel urine drinking, gut eating, etc., etc., etc. While those things were important to the story, they lost their effect after the 20th telling. It is too bad because this could probably be a good 8-hour (or so) read. To be clear, I am not objecting to the length, just to the lack of worthwhile content for about 75% of the book. I gave the low rating not to trash the author, or anyone else, but to suggest others really consider whether this book is for them.

Starts slow and gets slower
Revisado: 12-28-17
What began as a really weak story was crushed by the gratuitous foul language. It got so tiresome that we gave up. We are not prudes and don't mind some language that is in character and adds to the story, this did neither. It was foul language as a substitute for content. I hate not finishing a book and I would have listened to the rest of the boring book, but I am not going to sit through hours of foul language for a boring book.

Historia
Long before his arrest for the murder of 15-year-old Martha Moxley in 1975, journalists, neighbors, and relatives had plenty of reason to suspect Michael Skakel, a nephew of Ethel Kennedy. Murder in Greenwich is just one of the books that investigated this high-profile case.

Mispronouncing the subjects name really?
Revisado: 12-28-17
It was obvious the performance would be spotty when the narrator mispronounced Skakel (consistently). How in the hell do they not correct that. The book was really just OK. I was familiar with the story, but I thought that this book was helpful by organized information and filling in a few blanks. It highlights that there are two America's, the ones the Skakel's live in and the one the rest of us live in.

Historia
Birds, Jim Robbins posits, are our most vital connection to nature. They compel us to look to the skies, both literally and metaphorically, draw us out into nature to seek their beauty, and let us experience vicariously what it is like to be weightless. Birds have helped us in so many of our human endeavors: learning to fly, providing clothing and food, and helping us better understand the human brain and body.

Good but uneven
Revisado: 12-28-17
This book ranged from very engaging to mind-numbing. The first few chapters were great, but as we got to the chapters on the bird brain and language, we just about gave up. Like many books, this would benefit from and editor who would shorten the book by keep the author on topic and limiting the social cause diversions. Overall, it was informative and entertaining. If I were listening again, I would skip a few chapters.

Historia
In this stunning audiobook, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers" - the best and the brightest, the most famous, and the most successful. He asks the question: What makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: That is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing.

The worst type of social justice drivel
Revisado: 03-20-17
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Assuming that Malcolm will give them a copy for free, the "Occupy" crowd should love this. Nine-twelfths of them can find their excuse in the first few chapters and then roll over and go back to sleep.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disgust. This whining homage to victimhood is a slap in the face to the achievers and their families who have sacrificed for their achievements. Only in Mr. Gladwell's world is being the recipient of racial discrimination a privilege.
Any additional comments?
I am thankful I didn't read this book when I was in grade school. I might have realized that I was doomed and never achieved anything. If you are looking for an excuse for why life has beaten you, you will find it here. Sleep well. This interstate highway to mediocrity is exactly the type of rhetoric that will inspire achievers to spend their hard earned money to provide more opportunities to those willing to work for them. In short, don't waste your money.

Historia
The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story - with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.

Bad choices for performance

Where does If I Can't Have You: rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
In the middle to lower middle
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The male narration was adequate but not compelling. The automated voice used for the female characters was maddeningly poor. The first time the female voice came on, I checked to see if my device was malfunctioning. I will make a point of never buying a book that Laural narrates again. Regardless of direction, that farce of a performance demonstrated poor judgement.

Reasonably good
Revisado: 04-04-16
This was a good, but not expert analysis. As a spectator to some of the events, I would have liked to hear about the transition in the relationship between GEN Petraeus and GEN Odierno. Missed completely. Not much balance in the critique of civil versus military leadership. While I expect many excuses from the author, the bottom line is that this is an amateurish work.

Historia
It begins in Toronto, in the years after the smart drug revolution. Any high school student with a chemjet and internet connection can download recipes and print drugs, or invent them. A seventeen-year-old street girl finds God through a new brain-altering drug called Numinous, used as a sacrament by a new Church that preys on the underclass. But she is arrested and put into detention, and without the drug, commits suicide. Lyda Rose, another patient in that detention facility, has a dark secret: She was one of the original scientists who developed the drug.

Might be better as a movie
Revisado: 07-17-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. My overall description of the book is "tedious". The overly descriptive style, far too much exposition and the gratuitous language got so tiresome that I considered not finishing the book. The plot was interesting, but the author spent so much time developing characters that were tangential, describing every minute detail of the setting, etc. that it was easy to lose track of what was happening with the main characters. I won't purchase another Daryl Gregory book as I have to believe this is his style, not issues limited to this one book.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Yes. The narrators "little girl" voice really clashed with the frequent use of f*ck.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Maybe.

What did you like best about The Word of Promise Complete Audio Bible: NKJV? What did you like least?
The reading and music are great. Very engaging. Unfortunately, there are more than 600 chapters and nowhere (that I can find) does the publisher provide a crosswalk to the books of the bible.
Any additional comments?
