Hard to stick with it
Revisado: 09-03-24
Two thirds of the book spent way too much time describing every little move and blood and gore in long, drawn out fights. Felt like the book’s purpose was just to describe the way the dog thought or details of gory struggles. The plot moved along glacially.
Finally, toward the end, the easily foreseen plot details were revealed.
I bought it at a sale price and couldn’t return it, but I would have half way through if it had been possible.
The narrator’s performance style detracts from the story, too.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Worth listening to the whole thing.
Revisado: 02-20-24
Most of the time, the thoroughness of the story and the background were fascinating. It was great to know the backgrounds of all of the people involved. And descriptions of the races were riveting. It was hard to put it down and quit listening. Only one small thing I wished the narrator had done. It would have been nice if he had learned how to pronounce all of the names of Northwest towns and locations. Since it was about the Seattle area, it was grating when he repeatedly pronounced places, like Puyallup and Anacortes, the wrong way. There were several instances of this sort of thing. Maybe only a Northwesterner would notice.

Authentic but drawn out
Revisado: 12-09-23
The characters were interesting, the tribal setting authentic, and the plot started out well enough. But soon it became slow and drawn out. After waiting for the action to get going for over half the book, I finally just skipped to the last few chapters. It wrapped everything up and what little of importance that I had missed could easily be inferred from the ending.

Connelly doesn’t disappoint
Revisado: 11-16-23
I wait eagerly for every new Haller book, and this one was well worth the wait. I wanted to make it last several days, but couldn’t put it down - figuratively. Even though the overall storyline is a bit predictable, the interaction of the characters and the process of getting to the final outcome were compelling. I can’t wait for the next one.

Hard to Finish

I only finished a book because I had paid for it. The background music was very distracting, and totally diminished the performance of the narrator. The story was way too long and drawn out. A tighter plot would have been much more compelling

I forgot why I hadn’t picked up a Mayne novel in a while. Too much tell and not enough show. Too much talk talk talk by narrator and not enough action to move the plot along.

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 02-14-21
I used to like this author, but I’m having trouble with the overload of description in his last couple of books. All that minute detail, I find myself zoning out and waiting for the story to return. A good story but too much filler.

Disappointing
Revisado: 08-14-20
I like the premise of the story and the characters. I’ve read previous titles by this author and enjoyed them.
But...
Spoiler alert - don’t read further unless you want to know about the thing that really bugged me. If you are aware of it, it might ruin the book for you, too.
Her description of cell phone usage is all backwards. She has them using phones in the mountains, and says they have service when they are down low in the valleys, but they lose it when they go high. That’s the opposite of reality. Phones lose service when they’re tucked low in mountain valleys, but have more direct line-of-sight up high and can connect. (I’ve made phone calls at 13,000 feet in Colorado.)
Since the plot is driven by some of these situations, when it’s described incorrectly, the plot falls apart. I hate to see a good book ruined by a lack of verisimilitude.
