How do you tell a story like this without overwhelming your reader. Ms. Deraniyagala uses a delicate balance of uninhibited honesty and an innate wisdom of just how much to tell. She does not hide from the unfairness in the world, even when the unfairness come from her own actions. This was a beautifully authentic book to read.

After reading "Half The Sky", I wanted to find a narrative tale to better place the faces of the trafficked women in the world. Somaly Mam's book gave me everything I needed to connect with a world I do not understand. I cried, I raged, and I felt honored to be allowed this small window into lives that hold much more suffering than mine.

I am putting Tracks in my top five favorites. Robyn's spirit and passion for the adventure is only surpassed by her incredible clarity and beauty in her writing. I will probably listen or read this book every fall, when the darkness of the cloudy Pacific Northwest makes me yearn for the brightness of the dessert. She made me fall in love many times throughout the text, with camels, with solitude, with blue sky and dry dessert plants. But throughout her story is also the story of people finding contentment in being human and standing their ground against those who would dehumanized them. From her standing with gun in hand against rough men, to the aborigines who must stand against the intrusion of rough modern societies, this story so effortlessly spins such an intriguing tale that I found myself resenting having to pull my head out of the narrative to take care of my own daily needs and responsibilities.

The text is very well written and easy to follow. The story is filled with what you would expect from almost any story from most of Africa... Dark beauty and lots of suffering. It is a good read, in a journalistic/historical narrative voice. There is so much history in fact that I found I did not have to keep track of the narrative as closely as I would adventure books such as "Tracks" or "Carnivorous Nights". I listened to "Chasing The Devil" while at work, and when interrupted now and then I did not have to rewind to find the place I left off, but could still keep up with the tale without confusion. Well worth the read, but not one for my top ten list.
