Revisado: 02-22-25
Incredible book. Really captures the frenetic energy of the psychedelic movement as it blasted into 1960s American culture and the specifically unhinged form of the Merry Pranksters.

This paradigm-shattering book provides an even-handed, science-based understanding of who women are, both on and off the pill. It will change the way that women think about their hormones and how they view themselves. It also serves as a rallying cry for women to demand more information from science about how their bodies and brains work and to advocate for better research. This book will help women make more informed decisions about their health, whether they're on the pill or off of it.

NOT FOR US GUYS!
Revisado: 01-09-25
lol, not sure what I expected, but this one is definitely not for a full grown man. Probably a great primer for a teen girl, but pretty painful to get through for a fella like myself. Decent overview of the field, but peppered with cringe jokes, Ted talk affect, and girl boss bullsh**. She’s very tight with her “scientific statements, and then she throws in some hogwash statement and you start questioning the whole operation.
I was just hoping to understand more to know my gf better and I suffered for the knowledge.

What does it mean to label someone a fascist? Today, it is equated with denouncing him or her as a Nazi. But as intellectual historian Paul E. Gottfried writes in this provocative yet even-handed study, the term's meaning has evolved over the years. Gottfried examines the semantic twists and turns the term has endured since the 1930s and traces the word's polemical function within the context of present ideological struggles.

Great summary of the ideas and history of the historic movements and how the term has evolved. Not an argument for or against, but refreshingly objective.

Historia
As one of the most potent turning points in the country's modern history, the Opium War has since come to stand for everything that today's China seeks to put behind it. In this dramatic, epic story, award-winning historian Stephen Platt sheds new light on the early attempts by Western traders and missionaries to "open" China even as China's imperial rulers were struggling to manage their country's decline and Confucian scholars grappled with how to use foreign trade to China's advantage.

Terrific book of Sino-British history
Revisado: 05-16-23
Wonderful book chronicling the history of Sino-British relations leading up to the 18th and 19th centuries where Opium smuggling forced things to a head; ultimately leading to British military route of China and a forced opening of trade. A much nuanced story of interesting characters from Britain, China, and the US. The fault falls rather squarely on the Brits and other westerners, but Chinese obstinacy and lack of domestic control certainly played their parts.
Would love a follow-up edition covering the remainder of the 19th century up to the Chinese Revolution!

Garbage narration, not worth it
Revisado: 08-09-22
I love these writers and stories, but the narration on this is amateurish, halting, and too distracting to even listen. I tried for 4-5 stories, but gave up. Many other wonderful narrations available on audible, but skip this one.

What if you could travel anywhere, whether Europe, South America, or the remote reaches of the African continent? And what if you could choose not only your destination, but your era, as well-so that you might choose from the sparkling court society of 18th-century France, a 19th-century whaling ship out of New Bedford, or the streets of Dublin in the early part of the 20th century?

Good but limited
Revisado: 07-16-22
He takes on important novels and writers and gives a fair range of writing from a specific time period and specific form. That said, very much is missing and the series would have benefited much more from more authors and discussion of movements and developments and far less of play by play through particular novels and thoughts about characters, etc.

This sweeping book is a systematic treatment of the historic transformation of the West from limited monarchy to unlimited democracy. Revisionist in nature, it reaches the conclusion that monarchy, with all its failings, is a lesser evil than mass democracy but outlines deficiencies in both as systems of guarding liberty.

Where Libertarianism Fails
Revisado: 05-18-22
I really wanted to like this, and so I was very disappointed when it was so fundamentally wrong. I come from a libertarian frame of mind, so am amenable to propertarian arguments and the like, but this was gibberish. He begins, as one should, with axioms, but none of his self-evident truths were self-evident to me and easily found counter examples. Then he built a castle on this foundation of sand and it was painful to work though each chapter of such a tragedy. Is this really what anarcho capitalists believe? Then I am against them.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Teen lit for adults…but worth it
Revisado: 09-18-21
I’m a fan of Weir’s work, but it does feel like teen lit in terms of characters, dialogue, and the even distribution of races that seem to be on some sort of equalization quota. That all said this book is a lot of fun and the payoff is the science and engineering details that always feel well done and contemporary.
So yeah, the writing is for adult children…aka nerds, but I’ve been called a nerd more than once, so I embrace it!

Nice angle for seasoned Epstein followers
Revisado: 07-28-21
This was new information to me and I’ve followed almost all of the media on the case. The information about Epstein’s finances was very interesting which is to be expected because that’s what her original story was about. The transcripts of her conversations with Epstein were haunting and revealing.
Of course we have to take such a personal account from a media personality with due diligence to its lean to show her role in the best light, but she comes off as very noble and diligent in the portrayal.
I appreciate people doing this kind of work and making the sacrifices to shed light on this kind of activity.

I should've known...
Revisado: 07-23-21
I was warned by other reviewers, but a friend really thought I should read it so I gave it a few chapters. Alas...
I am an avid gardener with a fairly deep education and appreciation of plants and permaculture principles, so I try to be open to some of the fantastic and surprising things that plants do. I was vibing with the first chapter which opened a door to some of the research of the last decade about the interconnection and communication of plants that was seen as preposterous only a few decades back. Then, around chapter three it goes way off the rails with some really speculative stuff about quantum entanglement, communication at a distance, and yes, aliens. There's actually a lot about aliens and while I try to be open to the possibility of extraterrestrial life, this did not hook my interest or credibility.
If you already believe in otherworldly communication, you'll probably like this, if not, skip it.
