Auto delete just erased a brilliant review that I cannot repeat. What I’ll say is that I found the friendship between Pepsi and Shirlie to be so inspiring and I truly appreciate the openness and honesty that they both shared about their lives before, during, and after all of the events that gave them the spotlight. I especially appreciated Shirlie’s timely friendship advice in Chapter 20.

Little is spoken of this in American churches today. This is to the point, clear, to the point and necessary for Christian godliness.

Deep insight in Islam and Christianity

Nabeel shares his powerful and passionate love for Islam and the role it played in his early years and family life. Because he shares so much of his deep love for God and his family, the inner struggle and turmoil in search of truth is palpable. Along the way, he makes some accurate statements about Christians in the West that we need to contemplate if we want to be effective representatives of Christianity. I followed Nabeel on YouTube during the last year of his life as he helped me understand the faith of my Muslim coworkers and how to make sense of a religion I knew nothing about. I miss his presence on this earth dearly and I’m so grateful for this book. I can’t wait to meet him in heaven.

I loved hearing this educated woman share her early academic career as a student and then professor. She speaks candidly about the opinions she had of Christians prior to her becoming a Christian. She is not wrong on many aspects. It’s a wonderful critique if we are open to hear it. I loved that it was not fear and condemnation that brought her to examine her world view and at no time, did she ever use fear or condemnation in trying to influence others. I did have trouble (later in the book) with the strictness of her denominations view on only singing worship songs Psalms, to the exclusion of other forms of worship. It’s something I’d be interested in talking with her about. However, I got past it to completely fall in love with her heart for foster children and adoption. She truly is an example of what a convert is. Where she’s started and where she ends is completely unrecognizable. Isn’t that what our conversions all look like?
Hearing the authors’ tell her story in her own voice made this story personal, vulnerable, real. She never lost her heart for people for being there for people in need. Truly an amazing R-rated testimony.

When someone says Don’t Read That Book….

When two defense attorneys say on national television “Don’t read the book” my curiosity peaks. What is it you don’t want me to know? All I found was an interesting backstory about the author and the mental and emotional impact that “the Trial of the Century” had on her and her small community. I believe this book was written purely for historical purposes and not motivated by revenue. You won’t hear any details about the crime. It’s more of a sneak peek into the less known workings of a high profile trial in a small town. I listened to decide for myself whether or not the juror tampering allegations were evident in the book or merely an opportunistic attempt for a new trial. There is definitely no clear gotcha moment but I can see how the overall tone may have opened that door. There should be some scrutiny over biases and how that influences behaviors. But I understand why the book was written. Is it about Ms. Becky, yes. It’s a personal experience of someone who was there and is a “day in the life of” story told from her own perspective. I appreciated the story, enjoyed listening and recommend it, especially now with so much controversy spotlighting this publication.

I didn’t enjoy this book. I’m not sure if this is really how Danish children/teens are raised. It sounded like a lot of reflecting on all the mistakes and trauma of our own lives and how that will affect parenting. That’s pretty much universal.

I learned so much from this course. I listened with my middle schooler as part of our history homeschool curriculum this semester. The lecturers made me feel like We were part of her discoveries. I believe the most important thread that connects our present lives is imbedded in an understanding of our ancestral past. I learned much about a world separated by centuries but one not so separated from the human experience.

The lecture moves quickly and highlights the major events in chronological order so it makes sense. I’d never heard anything about Russia in school except for the profound poverty and oppressive government. These lectures provide the necessary backdrop to explain the Russia we know today.

I was hooked on this storyline within the first couple of chapters but later had trouble distinguishing new characters with their rapid introduction by Austen. I went back and listened again and it helped some. Several chapters in, the story took an unexpected turn and I really wanted to see how it ended. The pace was pleasant and pleasing, never dull. I credit the narrator for that. Her portrayal of each person is wonderful. She truly brings the pages to life. I can’t wait to listen to her again.

This is the sweetest story. I was so happy listening to it. The narrator did a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life while keeping with the gentleness that is the trademark of Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin. It’s a great bedtime story but I wouldn’t want my grandkids to fall asleep listening. There are real lessons that are observable in this book. Communication, thoughtfulness, friendship, courage and understanding.
