Great first half, very long epilogue-like second half
Revisado: 12-30-24
The first half of this book is very interesting as it feels like it's the second climax from the first book continued. But then the second half of the book feels like an hours long epilogue filling time for the start of the third book. Truth be told, I considered not continuing the series. But I did see some potential so I kept going.

It was a day like any other when suddenly the world changed. The universe reached a threshold humanity didn’t even know existed, and it was time to finally be integrated into the vast multiverse. A place where power is the only thing anyone can truly rely on.

Good, even though it ends on an odd moment
Revisado: 12-30-24
interesting concept with multiple people being wisp away to another world. Jake's (the MC) capabilities are interesting and I like how he has an advantage based on his instincts.
What I don't like is how the book ends. It seems like it ends at the end of a normal chapter and without any climax at all. Not even a cliffhanger. Still, there is some very fun moments and following some of the other characters breaks up the monotony of jake and his shenanigans.

Historia
After he was killed and unceremoniously dumped into what he thought was a digital world, life has thrown Frank one curve after another. Now, he is starting to have questions about what is real and what isn't. He will have to walk his way between the worlds of adventurers and monsters, both of whom want things from him. His feelings run amok as he tries to figure out what hybrid intelligences dream about. Hopefully, along the way he can figure out what is happening, and learn to resist integration into the system by a mysterious AI (...which may not even be an AI at all).

Fun even if it seemed short with less substance than the last book.
Revisado: 05-23-24
not exactly sure what it was, but this good seems less exciting than the first. I feel like so many things happen in the first book and even though the MC goes through some cool moments, feel like things were a little jumbled up. maybe I don't know it just didn't seem as cohesive. still, I did enjoy it and the performance was very well done like in the first book.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

rough start, but man did it get better?
Revisado: 02-03-24
The only real issue I had was with the start of the book and how there seemed to be a lack of description on certain topics that were seemingly important. names were given of a people or communities, or even countries, but no description as to what separated them from anybody else in the story. this honestly almost had me putting the book down. however, things did get better and descriptions were made it was just odd to get them much later into the book. that being said, this story is amazing in the world building by Sanderson has me hooked. I'm already downloading book 2 as I write this review. also, the performances were very well done, though I wouldn't have minded if they took both voice actors and wove them into scenes together.

Historia
Yancy Lazarus is having a bad day: there's a bullet lodged in his butt cheek, his face looks like the site of a demolition derby, and he's been saran-wrapped to a banquet table. He never should have answered the phone. Stupid bleeding heart - helping others in his circles is a good way to die - just ask the gang members ripped to pieces by some kind of demonic nightmare in LA.

Too much detailing made this story a slog
Revisado: 10-06-23
This being James first book (I believe) I am glad he improves from this. I am a fan of his newer stuff, but this is a rough start and am glad he moved on from this one. There were some cool moments but they were overshadowed by odd pacing and way too much description. Here is an early example: Yancy is in a bar, some guy asks him to step out with him, he stops outside through the back, he gets into a car, has a rather brief conversation with some in said car, then Yancy fights his way out of the car. This all takes place within about 7-10 minutes for Yancy, but for us readers/listeners it takes up the entire first hour of the book. Many leads for future world building felt wildly out of place here. I am a US Marine corp vet, like James Hunter, and I usually like references to my Jarhead family. However, there are way too many of them and no service members may not get the references. There is magic but no explanation as to how it works or how Yancy came to use it. The combats were some of the worst moments because, again, there was just way too much description. I would lose track of what was going on because my mind wandered as the long winded description of just how Yancy pulled the trigger. I won't even get into how Yancy is just not a likeable character. Anyways, not James best work.
As if that was not enough, the narrator was not great for this characters. He did pretty well at the bad gay voices, mostly the monsters. But Yancy sounded awful. It is bad enough that I thought of quitting several times. This is probably the biggest reason I will not be continuing the series. Sorry James, this one's just not for me.

An actor is brutally murdered while sitting alone in his fully locked car. A note arrives claiming responsibility and explaining the man died not for who he was, but for who he pretended to be. He played Dr. Watson in a production of Sherlock Holmes. The note promises to kill everybody in Hollywood currently playing Dr. Watson: a surprisingly long list.

Dead from laughter
Revisado: 07-25-23
Ok, the story isn't the best part of this book, I probably give it three stars normally. But the laughs this book will get out of you is the highlight of this Book, which to me gives it a fourth star. Best highlight of this audiobook, however, is Luke Daniels reading this book. He just has a great way of presenting a joke, and then has a great way to portray the character that is a butt of said joke.

Great book, but...
Revisado: 07-22-23
Spiderman's combat quips fell flat during combat and it sounded as though there was no enthusiasm in them. This is so strange because the narrator was actually quite good in every other aspect.
Overall though the book's pretty good. You can definitely tell that this is a Jim Butcher book because there's a lot of what we love about his writing in this. I still Marvel at Jim's ability to flex his creativity but still allows this to fully feel like a Marvel story.

give it until the second act, it gets better
Revisado: 06-02-23
started off decent, but the second quarter was so much of a slug that it didn't keep my attention. I almost wanted to stop reading the book. But then the second half started to pick up. having listened to the first two chapters of the second book, I'm glad I stuck around because it sounds like a lot of the good world building comes in book two. The narrator I have heard in other books and he is pretty good. however I don't feel this narrator fits this book in particular.

Historia
Infinite Worlds is the most popular VRMMORPG on the market. Its maps are so vast, developer Hard Rock Data utilizes a network of highly advanced artificial intelligences to control it. But it’s not without problems. That’s why Game Masters like Jeff Driscoll have jobs. The downside? He’s not allowed to play the game. Something about conflicts of interest and favoritism. His very boring and tedious job is to help players deal with the occasional bug that slips through the cracks and ensure they enjoy their time playing enough to give a five-star rating.

Just ok
Revisado: 05-12-23
The story struggled to keep my attention for most of the book up until just a handful of chapters before the end. The author has a talent for piecing together small little events. But those small little events aren't really that entertaining. Nick podell however does another stellar job which brings this three-star overall rating to a four. Will not be continuing, at least not anytime soon.
