Rumors begin to spread of a species of hyperintelligent, dangerous octopus that may have developed its own language and culture. Marine biologist Dr. Ha Nguyen, who has spent her life researching cephalopod intelligence, will do anything for the chance to study them. The transnational tech corporation DIANIMA has sealed the remote Con Dao Archipelago, where the octopuses were discovered, off from the world. Really wanted to like this.
Revisado: 10-09-22
Octopuses are smart, fascinating, and likely sentient in a way very different from us. Yet this story can’t decide if it wants to be about the octopuses or about reckless disregard for the seas. I agree with the views of the author, but didn’t like the preachy tone of the book. Once again, it couldn’t decide what to be. Very poetic and descriptive prose, sometimes too long and too many adjectives.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

My first Stephen King novel
Revisado: 09-14-22
It was great. The narrator did a fantastic job or portraying the various characters...especially when they were (as part of the story) hard to understand or spoke strangely. Suspenseful, funny, bittersweet but with a happy ending it was,
And a kind-of spoiler (I had to know before I listened to it: the dog DOES NOT die.

Historia
Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandment finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading. Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, becomes something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future. Except the discovery of their bond would mean the death of each of them. There’s still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win. That’s how war works, right?

Bad news/good news
Revisado: 12-04-18
So the bad news is that Jack Campbell has taken time away from writing more Lost Fleet/Lost Stars/Pillars of Reality/JAG in Space/etc. stories. Its been 6 months and counting!
[Update -- just realized this was written in 2013 -- now released as an audiobook. Still good reading]
But, the good news is that this alternate history short novel is really good. I'm not done yet, so am not sure if it's standalone or not. It's obviously a Jack Campbell plot (which is good). Whether by design or not, this also hits home to issues with our current directions in democracy.
The narrator is good...maybe reads a little fast at times.

Excellent story, good narration except for...
Revisado: 07-27-18
Loved the story -- I even went to Amazon video and bought the six-part BBC version that the book is based on.
Good narration, EXCEPT for the times they felt it was necessary to "dramatize" the speaker with background noise, static, echoing, etc. The reader does the mood fine enough without the "dramatic" distraction. At one point, it was very difficult to understand. Didn't happen often, but I dreaded when it did. Otherwise, great audiobook.

Historia
In the three years since former fleet officer Rob Geary and former marine Mele Darcy led improvised forces to repel attacks on the newly settled world of Glenlyon, tensions have only gotten worse. When one of Glenlyon's warships is blown apart trying to break the blockade that has isolated the world from the rest of human-colonized space, only the destroyer Saber remains to defend it from another attack. Geary's decision to take Saber to the nearby star Kosatka to safeguard a diplomatic mission is a risky interpretation of his orders, to say the least.

Rob Geary goes to war against checklists
Revisado: 05-23-18
I could listen to this without knowing the author or character names and would know it was by Jack Campbell. That's a good thing, because the book has all the features of his books that I like. It could have been longer and the sequel will not appear soon enough. This is a good continuation of the saga of the Alliance's formation (as well as the Syndicate I expect). Christian Rummel does a good job of reading and voices as usual.
So Mr. Campbell, tell me what you really think about checklists.
Great listen!

Though she can't share the information with conventional law enforcement, Moss discovers that the missing SEAL was an astronaut aboard the spaceship USS Libra - a ship assumed lost to the currents of Deep Time. Confusing and unfinished story, but captivating
Revisado: 03-14-18
Spoilers here. I'm not a horror fan, and this book is near to that. Lots of blood and guts -- very descriptive with smells and horrible deaths. The time travel approach is innovative and unique -- any future destination is an "IF" that might come to pass -- and then disappears as a reality when the time traveler leaves. I felt the ending was just incomplete -- maybe the author wanted it that way, but I needed another chapter.

Nothing ever changes in Sanders. The town's still got a video store, for God's sake. So why doesn't Eli Teague want to leave? Not that he'd ever admit it, but maybe he's been waiting - waiting for the traveler to come back. The one who's roared into his life twice before, pausing just long enough to drop tantalizing clues before disappearing in a cloud of gunfire and a squeal of tires. The one who's a walking anachronism, with her tricorne hat, flintlock rifle, and steampunked Model A Ford.

Sometimes hard to follow (as an Audible book since I can't easily go back to re-read something), but a very engaging and interesting book. I am not sure how, but a sequel would be fun to see what happens after the book.

Excellent book -- clever and satisfying conclusion
Revisado: 10-19-17
I was glad this wasn't a trilogy -- it has a satisfying and clever conclusion. Lots of twists and unexpected events -- unpredictable in a good way.
The writing, narration, and science is excellent.
