Historia
By the early 1960s nearly everybody paying attention to country music agreed that George Jones was the greatest country singer of all time. After taking honky-tonk rockers like “White Lightning” all the way up the country charts, he revealed himself to be an unmatched virtuoso on “She Thinks I Still Care,” thus cementing his status as a living legend. That’s where the trouble started.

Unique, in a good way
Revisado: 09-17-24
I bought the Audible version of this book after reading a review in the Wall Street Journal and enjoyed it immensely. "Unique" too often gets used to mean "rare" or "unusual " when it really means "one of a kind." Mr. Coe's book truly is one of a kind.
Much of the book is not about George and Tammy, and rather than covering George's early years at the beginning, that comes at the very end. There are insights into the history of myriad varied topics: pinball machines, the Medicis, Prohibition, roses, and bullfighting, to name just a few. It's a bit wacky, frankly. And yet, it works. I felt as if I were taking a road trip with Mr. Coe, a wonderful story teller, and he was going off on topics vaguely related to George and Tammy, but always getting back to the story of their lives. it made for an enjoyable and enlightening journey.

Perfect Combination
Revisado: 08-28-24
I purchased the Audible version of this book to listen to on my morning walks. Christopher Scalia, the justice's son, reads like a professional narrator, keeping the listener engaged and never distracting us from the content . The collection of speeches and articles is interspersed with comments from Antonin Scalia's friends, colleagues, and family members. It all adds up to perfect combination that provides great insight into the man, into the Catholic faith, and into Antonin Scalia as a man of faith.

Acclaimed author Jonathan Rosen’s haunting investigation of the forces that led his closest childhood friend, Michael Laudor, from the heights of brilliant promise to the forensic psychiatric hospital where he has lived since killing the woman he loved. A story about friendship, love, and the price of self-delusion, The Best Minds explores the ways in which we understand—and fail to understand—mental illness.

Gripping
Revisado: 05-02-23
Even though you know the horrible event that lies ahead, this book grabs you by the lapels and does not let go. We've all known someone who suffered from mental illness and how the pain is spread to all of those within their circle. Jonathan Rosen beautifully articulates what it is like to see someone you know make that terrible descent.

The Cold War was not just a contest of power. It was also about ideas, in the broadest sense - economic and political, artistic and personal. In The Free World, the acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning scholar and critic Louis Menand tells the story of American culture in the pivotal years from the end of World War II to Vietnam and shows how changing economic, technological, and social forces put their mark on creations of the mind.

Historia
Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

Exceptional story and performance!
Revisado: 07-29-19
I loved both Wouk's narrative and Parieseau's reading of it. You really do get caught up in the characters, and you learn about WWII along the way. As for the reading, this may be the best performance I have heard. First, despite all the many different characters, you never get confused about who is speaking, because Parieseau voices them so distinctly. Secondly, he does the accents wonderfully: British, German, Russian, Italian, Polish. He has Churchill down -- including "Nazzy" instead of "Not-zee". Really a superb performance of a wonderful story, and I look forward to hearing "War and Remembrance."

Historia
In 1763, the painter Joshua Reynolds proposed to his friend Samuel Johnson that they invite a few friends to join them every Friday at the Turk's Head Tavern in London to dine, drink, and talk until midnight. Eventually, the group came to include among its members Edmund Burke, Adam Smith, Edward Gibbon, and James Boswell. It was known simply as "the Club". In this captivating audiobook, Leo Damrosch brings alive a brilliant, competitive, and eccentric cast of characters.

Wonderful visit to the literary past
Revisado: 04-07-19
By intertwining the mini biographies of his main characters, Professor Damrosch has given us deep insight into the literary past. The characters come alive in discussions and conversations and we learn plenty of interesting facts along the way. For instance, most people in the 18th Century did not how to swim.

The best-selling author of Truman and John Adams, David McCullough has written profiles of exceptional men and women past and present who have not only shaped the course of history or changed how we see the world but whose stories express much that is timeless about the human condition. Here are Alexander von Humboldt, whose epic explorations of South America surpassed the Lewis and Clark expedition; Harriet Beecher Stowe, "the little woman who made the big war”....

David McCullough never disappoints. Here, he gives stories of people we never heard of -- but should have -- and little-known stories about famous figures we've all heard of. The man's love of history comes through in every anecdote, every detail, and you can't help but feel it as well.

Historia
Jonathan Swift is best remembered today as the author of Gulliver’s Travels, the satiric fantasy that quickly became a classic and has remained in print for nearly three centuries. Yet Swift also wrote many other influential works, was a major political and religious figure in his time, and became a national hero, beloved for his fierce protest against English exploitation of his native Ireland. What is really known today about the enigmatic man behind these accomplishments? Can the facts of his life be separated from the fictions?

This essential biography, by the author most deeply familiar with the vast archives of the Soviet era, offers an unprecedented, fine-grained portrait of Stalin, the man and dictator. Without mythologizing Stalin as either benevolent or an evil genius, Khlevniuk resolves numerous controversies about specific events in the dictator's life while assembling many hundreds of previously unknown letters, memos, reports, and diaries into a comprehensive, compelling narrative of a life that altered the course of world history.

Insightful look at a dictator
Revisado: 03-10-19
I learned a lot about Stalin's background and behind the scenes decision-making that I didn't know before. At first, it was a little disconcerting how the author switched back and forth between Stalin's early life and his final hours. But once I got used to that, it made sense and added to the enjoyment of the book.

Historia
Hailed as the most compelling biography of the German dictator yet written, Ian Kershaw's Hitler brings us closer than ever before to the heart of its subject's immense darkness. From his illegitimate birth in a small Austrian village to his fiery death in a bunker under the Reich chancellery in Berlin, Adolf Hitler left a murky trail, strewn with contradictory tales and overgrown with self-created myths. One truth prevails: the sheer scale of the evils that he unleashed on the world has made him a demonic figure without equal in the 20th century.
