Historia
First published in 1843, it tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean and unpleasant man who dislikes people generally and Christmas especially. One Christmas Eve he is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come and given a glimpse of the many homes and lives which Scrooge has touched in his wretched life to date. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.

He creates the characters with his voice. The way he balances and plays with cadence, tone, and pace is just magical. Can't believe I just discovered his reading of this classic.

Not Iggulden's best
Revisado: 07-21-23
I found it hard to like Dunstan, the character: overreaching, entitled, mealy minded, self-righteous, and self-absorbed. I struggled to get through the story.

Plodding, boring characters who are hard to get interested in, no idea where the story is going. Waste of a credit

Such fun! If you like John Scalzo, you'll like this.
My only beef is with the reader mispronouncing "ensign". Really irritating.

Great premise. Could've used an editor
Revisado: 08-31-21
The storytelling could've used better pacing: towards the last third, it started to drag. And the storytelling could've used a bit of tightening up: as it is, the last few chapters had to carry the load of tying up the different strands with a lot of exposition vs unfolding. It's a shame. I did enjoy the story but it was a bit of a slog at the end.
The narrator was not too bad, able to manage the different languages passably.

Historia
In The End Is Always Near, Dan Carlin looks at questions and historical events that force us to consider what sounds like fantasy; that we might suffer the same fate that all previous eras did. Will our world ever become a ruin for future archaeologists to dig up and explore? The questions themselves are both philosophical and like something out of The Twilight Zone.

As usual, Dan brings history to life with his brilliant storytelling: those very human angles that most professional historians forget. History is more than political history, and Dan reminds us of this powerfully.

Historia
The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction - cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade....

interminable snore
Revisado: 01-06-21
I really wanted to like this, but I simply couldn't get through the plodding pace and the story arc that took so long to develop that my mind wandered off. I finally decided to be good to myself and stop this self-abuse by quitting this story before it got anywhere close to the end.

Historia
Only mutual communication can forge an alliance with the planet's sentient species and prove that mammals are more than tools. Forced to land on a planet they aren't prepared for, human colonists rely on their limited resources to survive. The planet provides a lush but inexplicable landscape—trees offer edible, addictive fruit one day and poison the next, while the ruins of an alien race are found entwined in the roots of a strange plant. Conflicts between generations arise as they struggle to understand one another and grapple with an unknowable alien intellect.

Tedious
Revisado: 03-05-19
The premise is interesting, but the storytelling was so tedious that I didn’t care when late swathes of the performance went by while I did chores. The didactic style combined with a reflective perspective made me feel like I was lectured at by a old timer who had to walk to and from school uphill both ways.
