Historia
Food and cocktails columnist Hayley Powell usually reserves judgement for local cuisine, not the people who serve it. But staying neutral isn't so easy when caught between the biggest seafood rivals in town—her BFF Mona Barnes and the successful Leighton clan. Adding to a bitter decades-old surf-turf war between family businesses, a modern Romeo and Juliet story unfolds as Mona's son gets engaged to the daughter of her sworn enemy.

Another fun story in the Hayley Powell mystery series
Revisado: 04-05-25
I’ve really enjoyed the books in this cozy mystery series that always includes recipes centered around a theme, in this case clams, and an accompanying cocktail. Quick, easy read, and enjoyable as always. Can you figure out whodunnit before Hayley does?

Her sister, Tori, a divorcee who owns a catering business in Boston, also flies in to join the others at the hospital. But an unexpected run-in with their father’s rather attractive neurologist adds a new dimension to the days and weeks ahead.

Just OK - Book 1 of 7
Revisado: 03-28-25
This was a quick, easy, “beach read”, and book 1 of 7 in the series. It is not necessarily stand alone in that a few plot points were resolved, but many more hanging or just getting started. I found a lot of the dialogue to be rather cutesy, which I personally didn’t care for, and there were a lot of characters to keep track of, but overall I enjoyed it enough to read another in the series if I can find it to borrow but not enough to buy.

Slow start, but gets better
Revisado: 03-25-25
3.5 stars. Slow start, I almost put it down and didn’t finish, but got better as it progressed. This is written as a historical novel, but is based on the true story of Pino Lella and the role he played in his native county of Italy during WWII. Worth the read, but I didn’t love it. Narrator was verrrry sloooow… I enjoyed it more after increasing the speed to something that was more of a natural listening speed for me.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Engaging and fast-paced
Revisado: 03-14-25
I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would! Fantasy genre with action/adventure and romance. I believe it is considered Young Adult, but wasn’t juvenile. Quick read, thoroughly engaging, and I definitely plan to read the next in the series, and will likely reread this one in the future!

Read a synopsis of Part 1 & pick it up at Part 2…
Revisado: 01-23-25
I had been planning to rate this book 2 stars, and upped it a full star for the ending. I was surprised at how many 5 star reviews this book got - I’m guessing that is because of the twisty surprise ending. I personally did not care for the writing style. It seemed almost juvenile to me, but maybe that was supposed to be the character as it was told in first person point of view. The story was told in 3 parts, and part 1 took about 2/3 of the book. It was constant gaslighting - basically every conversation was some form of gaslighting - it felt like the author was trying too hard and shoving it down the reader’s throat. Also way overused the word “so”… So good, so much, so bad, so this, so that, so, so, so… It also felt like it needed major editing and should have been reduced by about half. It just seemed to be the same thing over and over and just got boring. Several times I considered not finishing, but I wanted to finish and figure out why it has such high ratings. Part 2 started to get interesting, and starts to add some major twists to the story. Part 3 and the epilogue were pretty good and kept me interested. I feel like I would have been fine reading only a few chapters and a synopsis of Part 1, then read through the rest of the book. I’m actually pretty curious about the second book in the series as it has potential to be a really good story, but not sure it’s worth slogging through something as drawn out as Part 1 of this book again. I might eventually give it a try… We’ll see!

Hilarious- The only full cast narration I’ve enjoyed
Revisado: 01-23-25
Fun short story - audiobook. Kind of a fluffy story, but it was the two main narrators that made it work. It was hilarious and at times made me laugh out loud! Glad it was pretty short as I was ready for it to end when it did. Normally I don’t like full cast audiobooks, but this one worked since it was primarily the two main characters regaling their “adventure” and the detective interviewing them; the other character voices were very minor and didn’t distract from the story trying to figure out who they were.

Excellent installment in the Coffeehouse Murder Mystery series! It takes place in Washington DC and introduces the opening of the new DC Village Blend satellite location. It starts with a bang and stays fast paced the entire way while telling the story in a series of basically flashbacks from the past few weeks. One of the best in a great series!

This is a dramatization, not narration
Revisado: 12-27-24
I didn’t realize this was a dramatization when I downloaded it, just thought it had multiple narrators as some other books do. I found myself getting lost is who was who and decided to not finish. I will either read a physical copy of this book or find a single narrator. Would enjoy just hearing this book with Peter Dinklage as the narrator. If you like dramatizations, give this a try!

2.5 stars. Ok, but not my cup of tea
Revisado: 12-27-24
2.5 stars. I liked that the protagonist was a history and architecture enthusiast. However the story just seemed to drag for me, and I found my attention wandering often. It seemed like things didn’t really start to pick up with the discovery of a murder until after halfway through the book. Overall it was ok, but just not my cup of tea.

Historia
One week with one little girl—an angel, according to my staffing agency. Acting as the short-term nanny for a single dad should have been an easy way to make some extra cash. Until I show up for my first day and face off with a demon disguised as a seven-year-old girl wearing a red tutu and matching glitter slippers. Oh, and her father? My temporary boss? Maddox Holiday. The same Maddox Holiday I crushed on in high school. The same Maddox Holiday who didn’t even know I existed.
