Historia
Oliver Sacks' The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat tells the stories of individuals afflicted with fantastic perceptual and intellectual aberrations: patients who have lost their memories and with them the greater part of their pasts; who are no longer able to recognize people and common objects; who are stricken with violent tics and grimaces or who shout involuntary obscenities; whose limbs have become alien; who have been dismissed as retarded yet are gifted with uncanny artistic or mathematical talents.

Historia
Germany, 1945. The soldiers who liberated the Gross-Rosen concentration camp said the war was over, but nothing feels over to 18-year-old Zofia Lederman. Her body has barely begun to heal; her mind feels broken. And her life is completely shattered: Three years ago, she and her younger brother, Abek, were the only members of their family to be sent to the right, away from the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Everyone else—her parents, her grandmother, radiant Aunt Maja—they went left.

Once I started listening to this book, I couldn't stop! the writing and narration are superb. I don't know what else to say about this book, because I don't want to give away any of its surprises, and there are so many surprises! just get it.
update: it's been a couple of months since I listened to this book. I'm about to restart it, bc it has stayed with me in a way that most books don't. There aren't many really memorable books out there, and this is one of them.

Grandpa and Noah are sitting on a bench in a square that keeps getting smaller every day. The square is strange but also familiar, full of the odds and ends that have made up their lives: Grandpa's work desk, the stuffed dragon that Grandpa once gave to Noah, the sweet-smelling hyacinths that Grandma loved to grow in her garden.

beautiful
Revisado: 03-24-21
This little story was absolutely a work of art. The sense of loss was very real. Just like Bachmann's other books, there was redemption at the end; however, this story was not light and humorous like the others. I shed real tears during this one.

The characters are dumb, but likable. The narration is acceptable. The plot is pretty good. The ending sucks.

"My father was in the hospital and every night when I visited him, I read aloud to him. James Thurber. And one night he said, 'You really should do that on your show,' and I said, 'Dad, it’s a television newscast. I’d love to, but how could it possibly fit?' And he said, 'How often have I ever suggested anything for your shows?' And I remembered that he never had. But I also reminded him that there were things like copyrights and bills, to which he said, 'Try it. You never know.'"

how is this the only Thurber on Audible?!
Revisado: 08-06-18
I agree with the narrator that Thurber was one of America's best writers of the 20th century. I only discovered him on accident in highschool, though. He isn't taught. Nobody seems to know him anymore. I think he's hilarious.
Well, as far as collections go this one is adequate. I wish the stories were more cohesive as they are in the original collections. Also, that they were read by an actor, not a sportscaster. But! I am glad it is here! I hope there will be more Thurber soon! If you don't know Thurber, but like comedy, dont be put off by the over-enthusiastic reading, or confused by the disjointed stories, go ahead and buy it; he's hilarious in any form!

This is a funny one that is just the right length to make a happy start to the day. I just wish they didn't have the annoying "AUDIBLE KIDS!" at the beginning of all of the children's stories. My kids hate that voice!

a positive and uplifting viewpoint, very helpful!
Revisado: 08-03-18
I've been listening to this book in bits and pieces ever since we received my son's diagnosis earlier this year. With all the information about how to "fix" the autistic child, Dr. Prizant's viewpoint is not just enlightening, but uplifting. He truly has a "differently-abled" approach. The autistic individual is not broken so much as our ability to communicate and work together is. He breaks out of the traditional make-my-child-normal approach and focuses on how to help the autistic person be as complete a person as possible. Every parent of a child with autism should get to read this book. We need to stop fixing our children and start raising them!

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

a quirky story that sneaks up on you ;)
Revisado: 08-03-18
This book is truly foreign. And I love it for that. It is quirky and bizarre and unexpected. It reminds me of the one about the old man who snuck out of the nursing home. This book starts out dismal and depressing. You have to hang in there with Ove. I don't want to give anything away, but the ending has a feeling like it happened against the author's will, like the characters in this book have such a strong will, even their author couldn't stop them! lol. It is a little bit absurd, but so are most of our lives. I love it.
