Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, Esme spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, a garden shed in Oxford where her father and a team of lexicographers are gathering words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Esme's place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day, she sees a slip containing the word bondmaid flutter to the floor unclaimed. Esme seizes the word and hides it in an old wooden trunk that belongs to her friend, Lizzie, a young servant in the big house.

Life-changing
Revisado: 07-10-21
A watershed moment in my literary journey. This book not only appealed to my love of words and their etymology, but also forced me to examine my own attitudes and ideas about so many women's (nay, human) issues which I never before had reason to question or challenge.

Utterly without dimension
Revisado: 06-13-21
There was so much potential for Anton to grow into a memorable character, but he ended up stayingg utterly one-dimensional and unrelateably perfect. His flawless and angelic perfection became sickening in the end.

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

A beautifully woven period drama
Revisado: 10-21-20
I am thoroughly enjoying the excellent selection of favourite classics currently included for free on Audible Plus, and this production of North and South is one of the stellar choices that is available. The narrator did an excellent job of adding depth and beauty to the characters through her distinct, believable portrayal of each. And oh, those last two lines of this novel...sheer perfection!

Historia
Recently orphaned, young Rose Campbell is sent to the "Aunt Hill", where Uncle Alex, her six aunts, and seven boy cousins live in noisy confusion. It is nothing like the quiet girls’ boarding school that has been Rose’s home for the past year. Surrounded by a bewildering array of pets, relatives, and unfamiliar foods, the fragile girl wonders if she will ever get used to this new life. Fortunately, Uncle Alex is her guardian. He keeps the aunts from coddling her too much, and makes sure that she has plenty of time to play outside with her cousins.

Moving coming of age story, beautifully performed
Revisado: 12-01-18
We read Wilson Rawls' 'Summer of the Monkeys' earlier this year and it is now on our family's list of favourite books. (My children are 11, 9, 7 and 5. Rawls' books appeal especially to the older two). We were therefore quite keen to try Where The Red Fern Grows, and I am so happy that we chose this Audible version. Anthony Heald's performance was moving and beautiful. He really brought the nuances of each character's personality to life through his sensitive reading. I especially appreciate how well he read Billy... The story itself is hauntingly beautiful and a tale that will linger in our hearts and minds for a long time.

Historia
Of especially naughty children it is sometimes said, "They must have been raised by wolves." The Incorrigible children actually were. Turning sixteen is a bittersweet occasion for Miss Penelope Lumley: Her parents remain disappointingly absent, and her perfectly nice young playwright friend, Simon Harley-Dickinson, has not been heard from since he went to visit his ailing great-uncle Pudge in the old sailors' home in Brighton.

Those who have made the decision to homeschool their children have done so out of great love for them and a desire to provide them an excellent education in the context of a warm, enriching home.
