Historia
Kenya Curtis is only eight years old, but she knows that she's different, even if she can't put her finger on how or why. It's not because she's black - most of the other students in the fourth-grade class at her West Philadelphia elementary school are, too. Maybe it's because she calls her father - a housepainter-slash-philosopher - "Baba" or because her parents' friends gather to pour out libations "from the Creator, for the Martyrs" and discuss "the community".

Disappointed with disgruntled
Revisado: 01-22-17
Struggled to complete this book. At times the read was confusing. When referencing the key, why Kenyas parents never took her to a therapist about her sleep walking. It felt like this author became just as confused and decided to give up on the ending. I'd hoped that the ending was going to come together but it never did.

It was a decent read but nothing I would recommend. The moral of the story is what saved the book.

Historia
Ephram Jennings has never forgotten the beautiful girl with the long braids running through the piney woods of Liberty, their small East Texas town. Young Ruby, “the kind of pretty it hurt to look at,” has suffered beyond imagining, so as soon as she can, she flees suffocating Liberty for the bright pull of 1950s New York. Ruby quickly winds her way into the ripe center of the city - the darkened piano bars and hidden alleyways of the Village - all the while hoping for a glimpse of the red hair and green eyes of her mother.

All the dark forces meet in 1
Revisado: 02-19-16
This isn't the sort of book one can love. It was a rough read and a struggle to complete. I am clear that sex trafficking, molestation of children, racism, witchcraft, self hatred and misguided individuals under the pretense of religion exist but, does it need to exist all in 1 book? I appreciate the authors truth/imagination but the sort of darkness that exist in this book has to be spoon fed in small dosages. This book left me feeling extremely heavy and burdened. On a lighter note I did appreciate the authors ability to spring into character. Now that the book is over now what!?
