Historia
Sojourner Truth was born a slave in 1797. One day, she decided she didn’t want to be a slave anymore and simply walked away from her master. Truth spent the rest of her life preaching and lecturing against slavery and for freedom and equality. While helping former slaves integrate into a free society, she lectured fervently against the discriminations against women, and especially African American women. Her speech “Ain’t I a Woman?” is considered one of the most riveting women’s rights speeches ever given.

Biographical Summary
Revisado: 10-11-24
The text is filled with passionate portrayals of Sojourner Truth's numerous tribulations and renowned orations, yet the male narrator distracts from the book's intended message. It would be impressive to hear this account read by a woman from Battle Creek, Michigan, Truth's hometown.

Historia
In September 1960, John Steinbeck and his poodle, Charley, embarked on a journey across America, from small towns to growing cities to glorious wilderness oases. Travels with Charley is animated by Steinbeck’s attention to the specific details of the natural world and his sense of how the lives of people are intimately connected to the rhythms of nature—to weather, geography, the cycles of the seasons. His keen ear for the transactions among people is evident, too, as he records the interests and obsessions that preoccupy the Americans he encounters along the way.

Memoir truth
Revisado: 06-22-24
It is important to note that even though this is classified as nonfiction, it is also built solely on memories of a multi-month car trip with only a dog as a constant companion. In the end, what has been written, edited, and finally published is Steinbeck's truth after the journey is over, reflection has occurred, and polish has been added.
I truly appreciated the narrative voice of Gary Sinise, who I first fell in love with in his movie portrayal of George in Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men.

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Cain and Able
Revisado: 05-30-24
The story is a WWI interpretation of the Biblical Old Testament account of Cain and Able, with the death of Able coming indirectly from his twin brother's hand. Personally, I find Steinbeck's portrayal of women to be too one-dimensional. They are saints, witches, or so nieve the world must save them from themselves, which is neither accurate nor a stereotype I wish to perpetuate.
The audible narrator is engaging and the only reason I could palate the story from start to finish.

Historia
Growing up on the Navajo Indian Reservation, David Crow and his siblings idolized their dad. Tall, strong, smart, and brave, the self-taught Cherokee regaled his family with stories of his World War II feats. But as time passed, David discovered the other side of Thurston Crow, the ex-con with his own code of ethics that justified cruelty, violence, lies - even murder. A shrewd con artist with a genius IQ, Thurston intimidated David with beatings to coerce him into doing his criminal bidding. David's mom, too mentally ill to care for her children, couldn't protect him.

Amy Bloom began to notice changes in her husband, Brian: He retired early from a new job he loved; he withdrew from close friendships; he talked mostly about the past. Suddenly, it seemed there was a glass wall between them, and their long walks and talks stopped. Their world was altered forever when an MRI confirmed what they could no longer ignore: Brian had Alzheimer’s disease.

Historia
The tide is turning against the colonists in the Revolutionary War, and 18-year-old Elizabeth Morris cannot sit by idly. Quietly disdainful of her Tory parents, who drag her along to society events and welcome a British soldier into their home during their occupation of New York City, Elizabeth decides to take matters into her own hands. She realizes that, as a young woman, no one around her believes that she can comprehend the profound implications of being a nation at war - she is, effectively, invisible. And she can use this invisibility to her advantage.

I Am Woman; Hear Me ROAR!
Revisado: 12-03-20
An awe inspiring daughter of the USA's Revolutionary War, this tale's protagonist proves that women of every culture and of every chosen generation have an indomitable will to seek truth's liberty through love's bravery, even when the costs are insurmountable.
Representation matters. Female heroines represent more than themselves and the desires of their authors. All womankind is represented within this harrowing tale.

wow!
Revisado: 10-27-20
My 15 year-old son asked me to download this story for our daily drives to and from school which is about 30 minutes one-way from our home. Along with my 13 year-old son, my boys and I were captivated nearly from the beginning, often ending our commute with "a driveway moment," where we waited in the car for "just a few more minutes," to enjoy just a bit more of Hirsch's enthralling tale of love, loss, forgiveness, and the bittersweet celebration of memory.

Dicta Ultima
Revisado: 05-16-20
This last and ultimate volume of the Nevernight trilogy spoke more clearly to me than even the first. My hope soared at times wanting a true alliance between Trick, Mia, and Ash. And eventhough, this, my greatest joy for the star-crossed lovers, came to naught, their final solution offered some small absolution to my doubting heart. At the height of my grief, while listening during a car ride from work, the stinging salt of my wounded heart rained so ruinously from my red-tinged eyes that I was forced to vacate the highway for fear of harm.
So you see, my review's title is most apt since I too now grieve Godsgrave's ended deed through story denouement as one grieves the passing of family both beloved and reviled.

Each time, civilizations are ground to dust beneath the Demon King's hordes, but humanity has remained secure in the belief that a Hero of legend will always save them. There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. If humanity simply waits for the Hero's return, there may be no world left for him to save.
