v well written. hard to face the racism of 1950's
Revisado: 05-30-16
subject matter very bleak. l do not doubt that the stories reflected the life and time of some, and hopefully not today though ignorance, poor education and poverty still exists. The prejudice in all the areas turns my stomach though I recognise it in myself re: trash people... I am honestly not sure it was worth the time though the writing and descriptions are spectacular.

Historia
On May 13, 1945, 24 American servicemen and WACs boarded a transport plane for a sightseeing trip over “Shangri-La,” a beautiful and mysterious valley deep within the jungle-covered mountains of Dutch New Guinea. Unlike the peaceful Tibetan monks of James Hilton’s best-selling novel Lost Horizon, this Shangri-La was home to spear-carrying tribesmen, warriors rumored to be cannibals. But the pleasure tour became an unforgettable battle for survival when the plane crashed. Miraculously, three passengers pulled through.

Historia
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

Any additional comments?
I was interested in the contents of Ten Days in a Madhouse as I was a psychiatric nurse in the 'One Flew Over the Coco's Nest' days and wanted to know what the environment and happenings would have been in the early 1900's. The account was factually written - this happened, that happened, I saw this, I saw that... Basically all I learned was that people, some of which who should not have been there, were placed in places where they were bored, had little to do, were totally regimented and at times were used as unpaid labour (it was called occupational therapy in the '60's). I am not certain what I expected but what I got was a credible, dry and factual diary rooted in the actual time and place. No surprises for me but since there were so many changes and monies spent due to Bly's reporting it must have been an eye opener in her time. I was gifted this book for an honest review by audibleblastdotcom. Review by Evi the wife.

Historia
"For the love of God, cut off my head." The last request in Uncle Silas's will shocks everyone speechless, everyone except his favorite niece, Anna. More than death itself, the claustrophobic Silas fears a premature burial. Will her elders carry out his request? Anna is certain they will not. It's up to her to do the right thing, even if it is a bit grisly. Armed with butcher knife and candle, Anna heads for the crypt underneath the church in the dead of night. All does not go according to Anna's careful planning.

Delicious delivery, superb turn of phrase
Revisado: 09-10-15
What made the experience of listening to Last Request the most enjoyable?
Caprisha Page has done a wonderful delivery.
If you could rename Last Request, what would you call it?
You MUST listen to this!
Any additional comments?
I thoroughly enjoyed Last Request. Not only was it very well written, Jeff has a wonderful turn of phrase. I have never come across so many exceptionally surprising descriptions ; "plunged him into a cold bath of loneliness" , "the open shears yawing toward the organist", ... The story was so enthralling it was hard to believe that a whole 1 1/2 hr. had passed rather than just a few minutes. Caprisha Page's clear and enunciated voice - with just a touch of an accent - provided a perfect delivery. Unfortunately as I am older now I may not have time to read or listen to all the books from a few authors Audible and Kobo have introduced me to. I was gifted this audio book by audioblastdotcom for an unbiased review. An Evi review

Any additional comments?
I absolutely loved the audio of Prophesy by Barlight and rate it an 8 1/2. I had not expected it to be so funny or so entertaining. At times we actually laughed out loud. The various voices of the characters added to the hilarity and all of the audio was very nicely done. I am older and now and my ebbing time is valuable, so I have no problem stopping a book or audio when it does not entertain adequately. I am only sorry that the story was so short - it is like having only one bite of an amazing cake. Now to get more works by Crissy Moss. Any additional comments?
This audio book is the story is a story of a brave little mongoose who protects an English family in India. It was written in the early 1900's so it is not sugar coated as our Disney or children stories are today. The story is nicely presented but too realistic for me (age 65). It does add food for thought (if the mongoose destroys the cobra's eggs, why is it not fair for the cobras to eat bird eggs; if a mother bird wants to protect her babies, why shouldn't a mother cobra try to protect hers). The mongoose is described as cute and full of energy, and as I have lived with a series of ferrets (closely related to Rikki) the description is right on. This story will be enjoyed by children who are in their 'tearing wings off butterfly stage' as the killing of the snakes is vivid and well described. However, I much prefer Kipling's novels. "I was provided this audiobook at no charge in exchange for an unbiased review. Review by Evi

Teens will LOVE this book!
Revisado: 07-08-15
Any additional comments?
It did not take long to discover this book is for for the young who are awaiting their first kiss. At age 65 the book is a bit young for me and though I did no wish to devote 14+ hours to the audio book, I kept coming back to it to discover what was happening. I really enjoyed it. Secchia built a fantasy world that has many aspects of our world like mallard ducks and 'titanic' anger... The heroine is a feisty 15 year old and the attraction to a young man is innocent and delightful. The speech patterns between teens and teens and teens and parents sounds just like the teens I know and caused many chuckles. Parents, this is a great book for the girls just a little old to be a princess but too young to date.

Have you listened to any of R. C. Bray’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
As usual, R.C. Bray delivers an excellent accompaniment to Buying Time. Well done!
Any additional comments?
I found this book to be a thoroughly enjoyable book. It is well written with good characters and a great plot. Brittany, a colon cancer sufferer, is brought into the story and it annoyed me as it was so incongruous, but how wrong I was! Even the romantic content was well done and believable. I fully expect that this book will be made into a great movie.
