Historia
A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it's only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer's twisted work becomes clear. Sara's ex-husband, Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver, leads the investigation - a trail of terror that grows increasingly macabre when another local woman is found crucified a few days later.

cannot recommend if you've had a sexual trauma
Revisado: 04-03-25
Although Slaughter's writing and character description are excellent, this story is very hard to listen to , even if you have NOT had a sexual trauma in your life. I feel her descriptions of the insane rapist are salacious . Although as a good writer, she builds great tension into her plots, the story builds up and will give a woman nightmares that she would wish you never had. Maybe some pervert would enjoy this.

Historia
Abandoned pregnant and penniless on the teeming streets of London, 16-year-old Amber St. Clare manages, by using her wits, beauty, and courage, to climb to the highest position a woman could achieve in Restoration England - that of favorite mistress of the Merry Monarch, Charles II. From whores and highwaymen to courtiers and noblemen, from events such as the Great Plague and the Fire of London to the intimate passions of ordinary - and extraordinary - men and women, Amber experiences it all.

Forever astonishing
Revisado: 11-18-24
If you like learning about history through fiction, and if you are intrigued by 18th Century Britain and the period of the Restoration, this is a marvelous tale focussed on the life one extremely willful , self-centered, but surprisingly fascinating young woman. The mores of the times among the very rich , the coquetry, infidelities, and supercillious rationales for behavior are intertwined with the lives of courtiers and "women of quality". The narration is excellent. Long, but complex enough to keep a listener's interest in tact, this is quite a tale. The hope is that Amber got what was coming to her, but you'll have to read or listen to it to find out if she did? Not everything turns out the way you might think, however it is that you think!

When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

Amazing and revealing
Revisado: 10-15-24
The narrators were excellent . The content was somehwat astonishing, that Isaacson could have gotten that close to Elon Musk and that Elon Musk is actually a pretty humble guy. He has a genius and is "wired differently" as is written, but he is truly a remarkable, generous human being. He's done so much for progress of technology through his vision. I appreciate him in new ways .

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

The narrator was perfect. The story grows and grows and honestly gets better. I will never think of octopuses the same ever again. This made me want to adopt one, but I won't.

Historia
Atlanta, 1974: It's Kate Murphy's first day on the job, and the Atlanta Police Department is seething after the murder of an officer. Before the day has barely begun, she already suspects she's not cut out to be a cop. Her male uniform is too big, she can't handle a gun, and she's rapidly learning that the APD is hardly a place that welcomes women. Worse still, in the ensuing manhunt she'll be partnered with Maggie Lawson, a cop with her own ax to grind.

excellent narrator
Revisado: 09-19-24
The accent and voices for the characters were excellent. The story is well crafted, with a mystery and a reminder of prejudices that were once rampant in the old South -- at least I hope they aren't that way any more?!
Good narrator, well written, and it holds your interest. .

Historia
When a police detective is taken off life support after falling into a coma, only an autopsy reveals the murderous act that precipitated her death. She'd been working on a special task force within North London's Nigerian community, and Acting Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley is assigned to the case, which has far-reaching cultural associations that have nothing to do with life as he knows it. In his pursuit of a killer determined to remain hidden, he's assisted by Detective Sergeants Barbara Havers and Winston Nkata.

A bit complicated but still entertaining
Revisado: 08-20-24
George is a great writer and entertainer. The details she adds about ordinary life are charming, entertaining, and amke the characters come alive. She is a master of her craft. I found this story a bit overly complex. As I began to unravel it's complexities, it was an interesting perspective into customs which one country may consider essential and another barbaric. It shows how in some parts of the world women are still regarded as property, "owned" by their husbands and are useful only for what they can provide to and for the husband. To a Westerner , this is shocking to realize , but important to understand.
In toto , the story is quite good, just lots of complications that for me created some confusion for a while. Simon Vance's narration is superb, really and truly.

Historia
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

Abraham LIncoln - the USA's Mahatma Gandhi
Revisado: 08-20-24
Jon Meacham's narration was perfect. The pitch of his voice, his pace, and his matter-of-fact delivery was so easy to listen to. His ability to convey lots of very difficult to hear ( at leaast for someone like myself raised and educated in the South, who grew up with such a different take on the Civil War) information is admirable. I began to see things in such a different light. I never knew Abe Lincoln was portrayed as a tyrant , a madman, a devil even by the newspapers that I read as a young child. It was jaw-dropping to me to learn certain facts as seen and written about from another perspective. I have come away knowing that Abe Lincoln was truly a gift to the United States of America and to the humanitarian desire for equality of opportunities and allowing all people to be granted basic civilized rights-- not that I didn't believe him to be a remarkable person before. There was so much I learned about his life. It should be required reading of everyone in high school, regardless of race, religious persuasion, or gender. Abe Lincoln was truly this country's Gandhi at a critical moment in the USA's development.

Historia
In the tradition of Into Thin Air and Touching the Void, No Way Down by New York Times reporter Graham Bowley is the harrowing account of the worst mountain climbing disaster on K2, second to Everest in height . . . but second to no peak in terms of danger. From tragic deaths to unbelievable stories of heroism and survival, No Way Down is an amazing feat of storytelling and adventure writing, and, in the words of explorer and author Sir Ranulph Fiennes, "the closest you can come to being on the summit of K2 on that fateful day."

Revisado: 08-06-24
A true story. More of a documentary , researched, but still with its mystery. Valor, courage, bad luck or maybe a bad risk? The narrator was perfect, the facts , where known, are there for all to read and hear, but the courage of the Sherpas and Haps and the daring of the mountaineers is indisputable. True Olympians, all.

Historia
On January 14, 2015, Tommy Caldwell, along with his partner, Kevin Jorgeson, summited what is widely regarded as the hardest climb in history - Yosemite’s nearly vertical 3,000-foot Dawn Wall, after 19 days on the route. This engrossing memoir chronicles the journey of a boy with a fanatical mountain-guide father who was determined to instill toughness in his son to a teen whose obsessive nature drove him to the top of the sport-climbing circuit.

Grit and determination
Revisado: 04-04-24
Caldwell's honesty was surprising. He did not cover up any of his flaws. This tale of incredible focus, hard work, and gratitude for the opportunities encountered is truly inspirational. In some ways it's a coming of age story, only his coming of age was that of a mature rock climber, a parent, rather than a teenager turning twenty.
