Historia
It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girl’s pretty yellow dress can’t quite hide the ugly scar on her chest. Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he's restoring at a nearby lake. The stranger understands more about the scar than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives.

Absolutely Delightful!!!
Revisado: 10-09-24
Ina’s book was absolutely delightful to listen to and learn more about the legendary Ina Garten. Her voice is easy to listen to, so soothing, natural, real and fun! I learned a lot about this brilliant woman and now want to know more. I hate that her shows are no longer fresh and new on Food Network and hard to find. I applaud her for being incredibly transparent in telling her story. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was sad when it was over! 👏👏👏

Brilliant and Important Novel
Revisado: 04-17-24
This is a story that needed to be told and Kristin Hannah did a brilliant job. Well researched and years in the making, Kristin had input from those who have been there. It’s certainly disturbing to learn more about what really went on in Vietnam and how horribly the vets (women and men) were treated when they returned to American soil. Of course as always, well narrated by Julia Whelan - her excellent narration brought the novel to life as usual.

A nice long listen with well developed characters. I did take me a little bit to get totally invested but well worth it! The narration was especially fabulous!! I learned a lot about Italy’s history before and during WWII. Highly recommend, especially for lovers of historical fiction.

Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Absolutely incredible narration
Revisado: 05-01-23
I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect of this novel and I’ll admit I was a bit taken aback during some of the time periods of this gay coming of age story but it was woven together beautifully as the book wore on - the characters incredible well developed and I felt that I was “getting to know” each one. There are some who may be turned off by the subject of a gay coming of age story but I found it insightful as well as disturbing the way “queers” were treated decades ago. I found myself tearing up at the end - I certainly did not expect that. And as far as the narration is concerned I am stunned that anyone would give this narrator less than 5 stars. It was impeccable, one of the best narrators I have listened to. And I have listened to 100s of audio books. Mr Hogan is right up there at the top. Now let me go find more books he has narrated!

Historia
In late March 1944, as Stalin’s forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear’s intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves - murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect “pure-blood” Germans? The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century.

Mark Sullivan has done it again
Revisado: 04-09-23
The only other book I have read or listened to by Mark Sullivan is Beneath a Scarlett Sky which was also excellent. Mark has masterfully interwoven the story of the Martel family’s journey interspersed with WWII history and atrocities. Although liberty had to be taken with the conversations and interaction with the people, he has based it upon known facts regarding their struggles. As he said this is truly an American story of freedom, the hardships the Martels faced (and hardships is hardly an adequate word for what they went through) would break the majority of us. It is also ann inspiring story of the human spirit and will to survive. I thought the narration was excellent for this particular story - not over the top, just right. You will especially like it if you are a fan of WWII books or even if you are not a fan you will enjoy it very much. Based on true story books are one of my personal favorites.

Happy to put this one behind me
Revisado: 03-31-23
First book I have ever listened to by this author and the last. Perhaps if the narrator had not been so awful I may have “enjoyed” it more, but her style was juvenile and the inflections in her voice contrived; not realistic at all, no one talks like that. The characters were not well developed at all and it read like a Harlequin romance and I am definitely not a fan of that genre. I think I paid $1.99 for this on an audible daily deal, glad I didn’t use a credit.
