Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Incredibly disappointing
Revisado: 11-01-24
There was nothing to like. The new narrator is TERRIBLE - monotone and all voices, male and female are the same. Disastrous choice. Loyal readers waited two years for a convoluted and disjointed story that was just a rehash of prior themes such as as police corruption (so sick of that!), disloyalty, and the isolated monks. Worst of all was the book title and wolf references from a viral meme we’ve all seen dozens of times - which one? “the one you feed.” So embarrassing for the author.

Historia
Riverside Close is a picture-perfect community. The six exclusive and attractive houses are tucked far away from the noise and grime of city life, allowing the residents to enjoy beautiful gardens, pleasant birdsong, and tranquility from behind the security of a locked gate. It is the perfect idyll, until the Kentworthy family arrives, with their four giant, gas-guzzling cars, gaggle of shrieking children, and plans for a garish swimming pool in the backyard. Obvious outsiders, the Kentworthys do not belong in Riverside Close, and quickly offend every last one of the neighbors.

Annoying
Revisado: 04-21-24
I thought the book was disjointed, contrived, deliberately confusing, and totally unsatisfying. It was a major disappointment from an author whose work I usually enjoy.

Terrible; unintentionally farcical
Revisado: 02-22-24
Every time I thought it couldn’t get worse, it did. The dialog was atrocious and out of date by about a century or two in certain places. The characters were caricatures. The plotting was a mess. It was a disaster of a book.

This is a tale of murder. Or maybe that’s not quite true. At its heart, it’s a love story, isn’t it? Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex-movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

Awful!!
Revisado: 01-19-24
What a stinker! The stench is so bad that it has ruined all prior and future books by the author. It’s a jumble of a book that tells a story and then starts over revealing crucial details omitted from the first telling. And then it goes back again and again, telling and omitting. I wanted to quit but hoped that something would happen to save the book. It never did. The worst book I’ve read in years.

Historia
When Jem Rosco—sailor, adventurer, and legend—blows into town in the middle of an autumn gale, the residents of Greystone, Devon, are delighted to have a celebrity in their midst. But just as abruptly as he arrived, Rosco disappears again, and soon his lifeless body is discovered in a dinghy, anchored off Scully Cove, a place with legends of its own. This is an uncomfortable case for Detective Inspector Matthew Venn. Greystone is a place he visited as a child, a community he parted ways with. Superstition and rumor mix with fact as another body is found, and Venn finds his judgment clouded.

So disappointing; sick of the cult
Revisado: 09-10-23
I originally thought the information about the religious sect that Venn’s parents belonged to provided interesting background and character insight. I did not realize the group would dominate every book. I thought Venn escaped but here they are again and I want to escape. The book seemed slapped together and disorganized.

Terrible; SCREAMING NARRATOR; incompetent DCI
Revisado: 04-16-23
Terrible narrator screamed the book with an annoying gravelly voice that kept cracking. Some of this was due to the constant screaming of the lead character who has the emotional maturity of a two year old and throws tantrums because he’s cracking under the pressure of being promoted to DCI.

Historia
It arrives in the morning. An old-fashioned airmail envelope addressed to Detective Nikki Galena. Inside, on a single sheet of blue airmail paper, are three words: You failed me. The second airmail envelope arrives at Nikki's home address. The same message. Only this time, it's followed by four names: Alexandra Cornfield, Ruth Baker, Bethany Lyons, Leanne Delaney. Four missing women. Four local women whose bodies were never found.
