This was really more of a short story than a novel but kept me guessing till the end. The narrator was really quite good. Hated for it to end.

Reading some of these reviews makes me wonder if they were listening to the same story. After 20 years on Audible and with over 1000 books in my library, you would think I wouldn’t allow myself to be influenced when another reviewer says a title is their favorite audio book of all time. But sadly, I used up a perfectly good credit on this inane, predictable, plodding bit of fluff. I forced myself to listen to the entire book so I could give an honest review, all the time thinking it just had to get better if someone liked it that much but no-it truly was painful from beginning to end. The entire story could have been told in an hour had it not been for the shameless padding of the dialogue. The narrator was not horrible but her “posh” accent was labored and all of the characters sounded very much alike. Needless to say, I won’t be listening to any more of this author’s books.

A total waste of time.
Revisado: 02-22-23
Can this be the Dorothy Gilman who gave us the irrepressible Mrs Pollifax with her fast paced and joyful adventures? It just doesn’t seem possible that the same author could turn out such a dark, depressing, dreary story. I kept listening, getting more angry and frustrated by the minute but thinking surely something would happen soon to redeem it. But no. Nothing worth hours of my time happens. Even the few scenes which might have been suspenseful or interesting were smothered by repetition and anticlimax. If you want to listen to hours and hours of a woman exploring her every thought, feeling, decision, and action throughout
her entire life, this might be for you but it wasn’t my idea of fun.

Not up to the rest of the series!
Revisado: 01-25-23
I am a major Mrs Pollifax fan but this one did not live up to its predecessors in the series. Only Barbara Rosenblatt’s usual sterling narration saved it. The story was slow, rambling and lacking in the usual action-filled excitement of Mrs Pollifax’s usual adventures. The ending was predictable and to be honest I was just glad it was over. I fervently hope the next book will be back to previous standards.

What a delight it is to finally be able to enjoy a simple meal again! I have been in the throes of morning sickness for the last few months as Darcy and I prepare to welcome a brand-new addition to our little family. Now that I am feeling better, I have realized I am dreadfully bored! It seems that all my nearest and dearest are off leading their own busy lives while I sit at home and attempt to train our two adorably naughty puppies. Fun as it may be, it is hard not to long for a little adventure, a change of pace, before my true confinement begins when the baby comes.

The Royal Spyness series is running out if gas!
Revisado: 12-26-22
I have read/listened to this entire series with great enjoyment. The last few books, however, have not measured up to the earlier ones. This book was just about rescued by the ending which was well done, albeit expected. Georgie’s activities get more and more improbable and Darcy’s opportune appearances are less and less believable with every new book in the series. I will no doubt continue to purchase new offerings in hopes that the quality of the earlier stories will be restored but I’m afraid it’s not going to happen.

Lady Jane Lovelace has conceived the idea of approaching the most notorious man-about-town, Lord Charles Welbourne, with a most unique proposition. When he counters her offer with a condition that he thinks will halt her impudence, much to the surprise of both, she accepts. A novel of passion and intrigue, The Westerby Inheritance is a thrilling installment in an emotionally charged romantic saga, all played out against a backdrop of elegant 18th-century society.

Horrible ending.
Revisado: 06-14-22
The best thing about this book was Kate Reading’s narration. The rest was rather predictable and it ended abruptly with so many loose ends it was ridiculous. I can only assume the author had gotten things in such a muddle that she didn’t know how to resolve the ending. Very disappointing and not up to the standard of her other works.

Historia
Must one sister suffer in poverty while the other lives in the lap of luxury? This question plagued Harriet Clifton incessantly. Inviting herself to her widowed sister Cordelia's posh London townhouse for the season was surely the only way to meet a suitable partner - as well as escape drafty old Pringle House forever. The vain Cordelia was meanwhile casting her net for the notorious Marquess of Arden, a man who would rather court a mistress than wed a wife.

Revisado: 03-10-22
So much better than I expected. Though admittedly predictable, the twists and turns of the tale were skillfully crafted and the characters were masterfully created. The touches of comic relief were almost laugh out loud funny and perfectly placed. I have read a number of Beaton’s romances and this was by far the best to date.

Historia
Melbourne, Australia, 1929. The year starts off for glamorous private investigator Phryne Fisher with a rather trying heat wave and more mysteries than you could prod a parasol at. Simultaneously investigating the apparent suicide death of a man on St Kilda beach and trying to find a lost, illegimate child who could be heir to a wealthy old woman's fortune, Phryne needs all her wits about her, particularly when she has to tangle with a group of thoroughly unpleasant Bright Young Things.

Not one of her best!
Revisado: 08-22-21
I have read every Phryne Fisher book out there except this one and I hate to say it but this was a big disappointment. In a word, it was just dull. Way too much atmosphere and descriptions of sybaritic lifestyle and way too little action or suspense. I also have to say that I much prefer the televised versions of these books (the originals-not the “new” Miss Fisher). I think Greenwood missed the boat by not introducing the sexual tension between Phryne and Jack Robinson in her books as they did in the televised stories. In the books Jack comes across as very two dimensional and the delicious chemistry between them and their marvelously adversarial relationship just doesn’t exist. So none of the books are as good as the TV versions but this one wasn’t really worth even listening to.
