Historia
For too long the Religious Right has masqueraded as a social movement preoccupied with a number of cultural issues, such as abortion and same-sex marriage. In her deeply reported investigation, Katherine Stewart reveals a disturbing truth: this is a political movement that seeks to gain power and to impose its vision on all of society. America’s religious nationalists aren’t just fighting a culture war, they are waging a political war on the norms and institutions of American democracy.

A Must Read
Revisado: 05-17-20
I am all too aware of this movement, having left it after about ten years. I married in and had no idea what any of this was about. I watched the true gospel morph into this unrecognizable force. I left, under threat of hell, illness, etc, as leaving God's call to His Kingdom's work and His protection. Evangelicals believe that only the Republican Party will save us from the rise of an antichrist, destined to come up through the Democratic (deep state) Party. What began, by successfully electing Reagan through "group voting," has reached new heights with Trump, literally anointed by evangelicals as chosen by God. Trump is their messianic champion, likened unto Cyrus, to excuse his lack of Christian behavior, while God directs him toward American greatness. I have personally witnessed the validity of this author's journalistic content. This book is a must read for anyone confused about the state of politics in the US today.

An antidote for post-modernism?
Revisado: 10-20-19
I was drawn into this book as a woman who loves to grind her own flour and bake her own bread.
Then, the author ties the nourishing of the body into the nourishing of the soul, if done communally. And not just communally, but as Christian communion, with a mindful recognition of the higher communal order that kneads all of life together, blessing it as well. Jesus fed each individual, knowing communities were made up of such. And knowing each individual longed to belong, vitally belong, inside communities as well. In today's polarized world, the simple message of the gospel seems nearly forgotten. Kendall Vanderslice revisits how to unite, rather than divide, diverse peoples under one umbrella. The solution, as always, is simple, but not automatically accomplished. It requires effort, but is worth its labor in untold blessings, as tangible as bread. I enjoyed these insights and would be amiss if I didn't mention I enjoyed the performer's ability to do the same. Sheri Beth Dusek caught the author's vision and literally speaks it to the hungry listener as well. This was a totally enjoyable and inspiring experience.

Historia
A timely and compelling new look at three key women in the biblical narrative. Among the mostly male-dominated narratives in Scripture, the stories of women can be game-changing. In this book Debbie Blue looks closely at Hagar (mother of Islam), Esther (Jewish heroine), and Mary (Christian matriarch) - and finds in them unexpected and inviting new ways of navigating faith and life.

God's femine side is being discussed, and at a time in history when power must be reevaluated, by both genders. This book gives real hope for the future of our "very human" race, by looking at several women, both historically and at present. The big questions are confronted head on, making this as intellectual as it is engaging.
What is power? Is spiritually sourced power demonstrated differently, or identically, based on gender? Is God limited or unlimited? Is power the same thing as force, or something different? Can power and love be the same thing? Can God interact differently with each gender, and still be the same God? Can God be recognized in the other, apart from cultural norms? Etc.
Debbie Blue speaks on behalf of many of us as women, who continue to embrace the biblical narrative, but rarely hear the entire narrative explored from male pulpits. We have always known there is more to the story, but we usually just live it ourselves, quietly and privately. Debbie Blue's ability to bring our musings, prayers and relational realities to light, pulls us together collectively in this one work, and does so with much humor and depth. She does not disappoint! I have the audio version and found the reader Sheri Beth Dusek, to be just as engaging and delightful as this author. I will definitely be listening to this book again!
