Historia
On a warm March night in 2083, Judy Wallach-Stevens wakes to a warning of unknown pollutants in the Chesapeake Bay. She heads out to check what she expects to be a false alarm—and stumbles upon the first alien visitors to Earth. These aliens have crossed the galaxy to save humanity, convinced that the people of Earth must leave their ecologically-ravaged planet behind and join them among the stars. And if humanity doesn't agree, they may need to be saved by force. But the watershed networks that rose up to save the planet from corporate devastation aren't ready to give up on Earth.

Really interesting and engaging story
Revisado: 07-09-23
This was one of the best surprises of the year. Both with the challenges presented in the storyline and the comfort with which the author moved on from current social issues. Extrapolating what happens as society and humanity develop…there is some really fascinating ideas. And a really nice take on first contact.
A warning - this is just about the purest set of triggers for political conservatives and zealots I can imagine (at this time). Surprised there aren’t more of them leaving reviews describing how much they suffer from books like this. Ignore that if it happens. It’s science fiction and speculative future and it’s good.
I also want to give deep appreciation for addressing characters on the spectrum in a reasonable way. And the fluidity and individuality of gender is also nicely done. Any issues with either would be on individual experience, rather than the overall idea…which is how any good idea should be.
I think it’s intentional within the story, but the pronouns, especially corporate, was frustrating. Took me out of the narrative a few times. Will probably listen again to consider that point.
And that’s probably a great point of feedback. I’m going to listen again, and I’m not done considering what the book has to say :)

Historia
When unforeseen circumstances during an innovative—and unsanctioned—commercial asteroid-mining mission leave two crew members stranded, those who make it back must engineer a rescue, all while navigating a shifting web of global political alliances and renewed Cold War tensions. With Earth governments consumed by the ravages of climate change and unable to take the risks necessary to make rapid progress in space, the crew must build their own next-gen spacecraft capable of mounting a rescue in time for the asteroid's next swing by Earth.

Not well edited…or else was just poorly written.
Revisado: 06-22-23
The whole book feels like he was told he needed to do a sequel. And then was told…mention some stuff from the news. So there is crypto/NXT/dao, North Korea, China. The climate change stuff is more about stuff pulled from headlines than the actual science or the scenarios likely to play out.
Poorly thought out details like saying no religious holidays because such an international crew, but then celebrating new years on the western calendar.
Characters were mostly quite shallow and motivations were super vague. The constant statement that they must get back to save the crew…but with easily 50 different opportunities to add depth and meaning to that were skipped.
And really, it seems like half the book was just filler. Long drawn out descriptions of docking a ship. Never relevant to story. Long chapters on small details that never do more than describe interior of a shuttle. Listing every single compound in the regalith. Shows that the author looked it up, had no benefit to story. And it really, really felt like it was just an long book so there could be a third one on the rescue. It it suddenly came at the last hour and wrapped up quickly with no meaning. Why go to such a length to write down so much and have characters fight for years to achieve something…and just spend a few paragraphs on it?
Other books great, other ideas great. First one in this series was really fun. This just feels like a letdown 3 stars because of interesting ideas about travel and resource uses. As well as good will from previous s book. If the third one is about mars…and he writes like there will be..I will wait until audiobook is free.
