I learned on Kristi Charish's Instagram that Voodoo Shanghai would be the last book in the Kincaid Strange series. Which made me sad and also made me wonder if we would be a clean wrap up at the end of this installment. The way Voodoo Shanghai ended leads me to believe she did not know her publisher would not pick up another book. It ends on a huge cliffhanger. I'm hoping maybe we will see at least one more installment via self-publishing.

The Kincaid Strange series is truly a great and unique urban fantasy series. Don't let the fact that it was "canceled" stop you from trying it. I believe it's an unsung series that needs more attention. It has everything a UF fan wants, a strong and likable heroine, action, a mystery to solve in each installment and with Voodoo Shanghai, Ms. Charish had me guessing who the killer was to the very end (I usually figure out the bad guy within the first few chapters of about 90% of the books I read).

Kincaid is working with the FBI on a murder case that takes her from Seattle to Portland. They believe it's a cut and dry case of a serial killer, but she's not so sure. With the help of her ghost friend and roommate, Nate (90’s grunge rocker), Gideon (a ghost who is training her on more advanced skills) and FBI agent Wolf she works the case to find out the whole story of the murder and missing ghosts in the Portland area all while trying to not becoming one of the missing herself. As I mentioned, Charish does a great job weaving the mystery into a hard to guess "who done it" that includes paranormal creatures such as ghosts, zombies, poltergeist, and witches.

While the case is wrapped up there are unfinished storylines within the series do to the cliffhanger. I really want to know what happens next. Fingers crossed that Ms. Charish continues The Kincaid Strange series at some point.

The Kincaid Strange series is an audio-only series for me all thanks to Susannah’s brilliant delivery of the characters. After becoming a fan of Susannah's narration work on this series I plan on trying more of her work. Fans of Khristine Hvam would surely enjoy Susannah's voice and pacing as they have a similar sounding voice.

Instant Gratification is the second book in the Always Satisfied series by Lauren Blakely and like the first book, Satisfaction Guaranteed, it’s connected to characters in Blakely’s Big Rock world. There are a plethora of characters in this novel and with a full cast of narrators, it was a treat to try and make all the connects to other books.

Instant Gratification focuses on Truly Goodman and Jason Reynolds. We first met them in Satisfaction Guaranteed (SG). Truly is the sister of Malone (SG) and Jason is his best friend. They have a chemistry and attraction that can’t happen or so they think.

They let that attraction get the better of them about six months before this story started. They had a wild night of great sex but agreed it couldn’t happen again. Of course, that doesn’t keep either of them from thinking about it and it doesn’t kill the attraction.

Truly is a bar owner and is working on opening another bar, an English pub. She asks Jason for his help his he is an Englishman. Jason works two jobs, one as The Modern Gentleman Of New York he writes a blog and guest stars on a radio show ran by Ryder Lockheart from The Knocked up Plan. Jason’s other job is as a Best Man for Hire. People who need a best man for their wedding hire him to play the part and write incredible best man speech. Like Truly, Jason wants to expand his business but first, he needs to continue the best man side job to pay for his sister’s medical schooling.

Jason has a few more weddings to get through before he wraps up his time in the wedding world, but most weddings require he has a date and his actress friend has to beg off because she got a role in a play and doesn’t have the time to help Jason anymore. Truly offers to help Jason out with the weddings since he is helping her scout English pubs to get ideas for her purposal for the new pub she wants to open.

This deal puts them together more than they already are and in some sexy situations. One thing leads to another and they are falling in love and figuring out how they can balance a relationship with their workaholic personalities.

I really enjoyed Instant Gratification but I wasn’t sure if I was going to like Truly and Jason because of their hate of bacon, but then she redeemed herself with her pancake song. LOL Seriously Instant Gratification is classic Lauren Blakely, funny, sexy and satisfying.

Andi Arndt (Truly) and Shane East (Jason) narrates the bulk of Instant Gratification. The POV switching was very seamless from chapter to chapter and within the same chapter, both narrators voice the back and forth dialogue.

There’s a slew of cameos from great narrators like Sebastian York, Zachary Webber, Bahni Turpin, Vikas Adam, Scott Brick, Emma Wilder, Hillary Huber, Joe Arden, Grace Grant, Marisa Calin, Lili Valente, and Adam Lau. Some have bigger parts with their cameos like Jason Clarke.

After enjoying the second novel The Bareknuckle Bastards series, Brazen and the Beast I’m officially a fan of Sarah MacLean. I enjoy her voice and the characters she pens. I plan on reading and/or listening to her backlist while I wait for the next release in the series.

I think the series should be renamed to The Bareknuckle Bastards and the Old Maid Virgins They Love. Hatti like the heroine in the previous book is in her late twenties (turning 29 to be exact) and because of the time period she is considered to be an old maid because she has not been married. Hatti doesn’t want the life society tells her she should have. Marriage and a family with her husband running a business. She wants to run her own business and she knows the only way to do so is to ruin her reputation by getting rid of her virginity. If she does so no respectable gentlemen will want to marry her.

Hatti meets Whit aka Beast the night she decided to go to a brothel that caters to females. Someone threw an unconscious Whit into her carriage. She believes him to be the most beautiful man she has ever seen. They share a kiss before she pushes him out of the moving carriage.

Whit cannot believe Hatti is not afraid of him like everyone else. She pushes all his buttons but he knows she is not for him. He believes she is too good for him and that if he were to go after her, it would put her in danger from his brother Ewan.

Hatti and Beast make an agreement that he will help her with business plan and the plan to her ruination. As the two dances around their attraction, they come to love each other. Watching them overcome their issues and find a HEA was very enjoyable. The banter was fun, the chemistry was very sexy and there was a touch of action and danger to round out Brazen and the Beast into a perfect romance.

Justine Eyre continues to delight my ears with her narration job on The Bareknuckle Bastards series. She does an amazing job switching from female to male characters. Justine is one of the few female narrators who can easily do a sexy male voice without sounding forced. She is the reason I used an Audible credit on release day even though I had an eARC of Brazen and the Beast.

Funny and touching romance

I’ve not read many romances with widowers, but the ones I have, have been so touching especially when they have children. Zach is a single dad who lost his wife a couple of years ago. He works hard as a divorce attorney, but he’s not a player or jaded. He is a champion to his clients. He works to keep (mostly women) from getting run over by their soon to be ex-husbands who are usually on the douchy side.

Across the hall of the brownstone Zach’s office is located in, is Piper the cheery wedding planner. The two have been frienemies for years. They share college friends and they have great banter chemistry.

Piper has become a great friend to Lucy, Zach’s ten-year-old daughter. When Lucy is visiting dad at the office she often pops over to Piper’s office to look at all the pretty wedding things she has. Piper and Zach have a receipt for greatness if they can just stop thinking the other dislikes them. They have both been having secret naughty thoughts for a while and when they are thrown together to plan their friend’s wedding they get to know each other better and start falling for each other.

Never Have I Ever is a great romance between two beautiful people and the funny children they love. I had all the feel-good emotions while listening. While Never Have I Ever is a stand-alone romance there are connections with characters from other stories. Piper was mentioned in Birthday Suit and two of the couples in Never Have I Ever get their stories told in Satisfaction Guaranteed and Instant Gratification.

I am a huge fan of Amanda Ronconi’s narration work on Molly Harper’s novels and I was delighted to see she is now working on titles for Lauren Blakely. It did take me a bit to get out of Harper’s writing style mindset to get into Blakely’s. They both have great characters which include strong and funny heroines. Ronconi delivered Piper’s POV beautifully.

Jason Clarke is a favorite of mine by now. He is not new to Blakely’s writing and I adore his voice and delivery. He handles Zach’s POV like a pro.

I’m a big fan of CD Reiss and will jump on anything she writes. She can pen dark/touching stories, fun/light stories and they are all sexy. Only Ever You was on the lighter side of her romances, about two friends from school who fell out of touch after high school.

Sebastian was a skinny, geeky guy in school with a huge crush on his best friend Rachel. She was always taking up for him when the bullies bothered him. They did everything together. Then they went their separate ways to go to college. They both came home for different holidays and breaks, always missing each other but their families keep them in the loop with news of the other one.

After nearly fourteen years apart, Racheal and Sebastian came home for the same Christmas. Sebastian made sure of it. They were both thirty and they had made a pack in high school if neither of them was married by thirty they would get married. Their parents found out about it and assumed they were getting together to start their engagement.

Since Sebastian has been in love with Rachel since they were kids, he was all for it, but Rachel thought it was a funny joke. Until she found chemo medication bottle in her parents’ trash. She was afraid her mom’s cancer was back and thought she was pushing her to be “settled” before she died from cancer. This worry pushes Rachel into asking Sebastian for the huge favor of faking their engagement to make her mom happy. They figured once her mom went through treatment and was better they would call off the engagement.

Of course, they had to make it look good and started “dating”. One thing led to another and they started to really date. There were a family drama and half-truths but by the end of Only Ever You Rachel and Sebastian got their long-awaited HEA that everyone in their lives saw coming but them.

Only Ever You is told through changing POVs with Andi Arndt narrating Rachel and Brian Pallino narrating Sebastian. I’ve enjoyed many titles narrated by Andi Arndt. She does quality performances and is on my shortlist of narrators who will draw me to a title no matter who the author is. She does a great job bring Rachel to life and her deliverance is always the right mix of pacing and emotion. Brian Pallino is a fairly new narrator for me. His voice sounded familiar so I looked him up and I have heard him before. Now I can say I will actively seek out his narration work. He did an amazing job narrating Sebastian’s POV.

I was originally drawn to My Two Husbands solely on narrator Erin Mallon then by the blurp. I mean who would be crazy enough to live with their husband and ex-husband?! Amanda Aksel is a new to me author and she does a good job of writing a romance with an unconventional love triangle between two best friends, Kyle and Jack and Natalie.

First I have to wonder why My Two Husbands is marketed as “A Laugh Out Loud Romantic Comedy”, I didn’t once find myself LOL while listening. Sure there was humor, but while I was getting into the lives of this trio I didn’t find their situation funny. I knew at least one if not all of them would get hurt once it was all over.

We get flashbacks in parts of the chapters (or episodes, I wonder if this story was originally released in parts) labeled “Then” to show us the history of the relationships between Natalie and both guys. She met Kyle first but Jack is the one she has instant-a-lust with which turned into love and marriage. After their marriage fell apart, Natalie and Kyle’s friendship blossomed into romantic love.

With the three living together there was the ever-presence of Jack and in order for the trio to move on something had to change. My Two Husbands follows the ins and outs of friendship and marriage.

Erin Mallon delivers outstanding performance for all three characters. She does an amazing job switching from female to male characters. In my opinion, it is hard to find a narrator who can easily do the opposite sex without sounding forced and because Erin can do this perfectly is a favorite of mine and I look for titles narrated by her and it’s helped me find some new to my authors like Amanda Aksel.

My Two Husbands ends with two different HEAs. The listener is given the opportunity to skip the next to last chapter if you are not “team Jack” to hear Kyle and Natalie’s HEA. I fell into “team Kyle” but I listened to both of the endings. For me, Natalie and Kyle’s HEA made the most sense and felt right for the two characters. I invite you to listen to My Two Husbands and find out what “team” you are.
