First: I’m glad I reread Adventures of Huckleberry Finn before this, but it’s not essential. Maybe just skim the Wiki or Spark Notes plot summary.

I was worried the “satire of a satire” concept of this book would feel like a hat on a hat, or worse yet, like someone just didn’t get the joke. But this book is extremely generous to Huck and the other characters. It quickly starts to feel like an essential companion piece or a compelling standalone story.

My background made me skeptical of anyone putting restrictions on certain activities, but I was relieved that this science-based book made clear that religious standards had their own agenda, and drove readers to figure out their journey and needs for themselves.

I could have done without several of the interviews, but the deep analysis of the Coens’ filmography, told largely film by film in chronological order, was insightful and rewarding. Even when I disagreed with the author’s interpretation of something (which was rare) I still have to acknowledge that he gave me the tools to make my own meaning out of these beloved films.

The protagonist is pretty unlikable, and the joke about being shocked that young children aren’t familiar with his dated gay culture references wears thin real fast. That said, I’ll be damned if these characters didn’t grow on me. Overall I was charmed by the book. It’s a fluffy beach read that still has some emotion behind its commentary on grief and loss.

I pride myself on knowing a lot of Friends history and trivia, but I still had a lot to learn (and regurgitate to my own friends and family) from this book. There is a lot of recapping the show’s actual events - a waste of time given that most people reading this book could quote the described scenes backwards and forward. Most of the recaps were short enough to make me chuckle and move on. However, the “Ballad Of Ross & Rachel” segments went on way too long, often with minimal behind the scenes treats at the end. I put the audiobook at a faster speed during those parts. Still loved it and recommend.

Aziz did a great job narrating a very data-driven book. He made me laugh out loud multiple times, even though he kept calling me lazy for getting the audiobook. Besides that, it was also just a very well done book. Definitely the most interesting non-fiction book I've read in a long time. I can't recommend highly enough.
