Sand, salt, iron, copper, oil, and lithium. These fundamental materials have created empires, razed civilizations, and fed our ingenuity and greed for thousands of years. Without them, our modern world would not exist, and the battle to control them will determine our future. In Material World, Ed Conway embarks on an epic journey across continents, cultures, and epochs to reveal the underpinnings of modern life on Earth—traveling from the sweltering depths of the deepest mine in Europe to spotless silicon chip factories in Taiwan to the eerie green pools where lithium originates.

Too much reliance on windmills and batteries
Revisado: 03-02-25
This is fascinating journey through the 6 essential elements on which we rely today. He overlays lots of ‘going green’ propaganda and takes as a given, with which of course we all blindly agree, yet no mention for example of the environmental damage the enormous windmill farms are causing the oceans and their creatures. You would think with all his concerns about the future of the planet, he would at least mention the effects of some of the ‘renewable’ energy sources on the planet. He’s a Brit, so maybe that’s cultural but there are big gaps in his handling of the green energy initiatives. Even so, the information about the six elements is well researched and provides an intimate look into how those resources are produced. That makes it worth reading. You just have to wade through the green propaganda.

Shameless promotion for his and his wife’s business
Revisado: 02-02-25
He is stuck on Paleo diet but his vision of paleo is fiction. He mentions Weston Price who studied indigenous diets but Wolfson obviously hasn’t actually studied Price’s findings. In Wolson’s paleo diet indigenous people were all the same, They killed and ate meat and moved rocks. But Weston Price found that indigenous diets varied depending on what was available. African Maasai tribes drank blood and milk. Eskimos ate fermented fish. So Wolson’s assertion that milk and grains are not paleo is just wrong. Sprouted organic fermented grains are delicious and healthy. Likewise raw milk and raw dairy can cure some illnesses. Otherwise, lots of chemicals and medical terms in the book and some helpful gems, but take diet recommendations with a grain of salt.

Historia
A sinister cabal of corrupt law enforcement personnel, intelligence agents, and military officials at the highest levels of government plotted to overthrow a president. Even after they failed, they continue to secretly pull the levers of power without any accountability to the American people. This isn’t the synopsis of a fictional spy thriller. This is what is actually happening in the United States government.

Historia
When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

Too much of Walter Isaacson, the Author
Revisado: 10-23-24
Elon’s story is complex and not finished yet. A next century mega person with goggle vision into the future. Read it to learn more about this amazing character of our times. Ignore all Walter Isaacson’s officious opinions and insertions of himself into the story. He’s minimally noteworthy as a person. And clearly suffers from TDS.

Arrogance
Revisado: 08-27-24
This author should take this book off the market or do an edit update. 14 years later, there is much more known about longevity that his guesses as to what centenarians do to live long are just that-guesses. Yet he gives misguided advice that is worthless for the most part. Most annoying is his almost angry assertions that anyone (else other than him) who gives advice on longevity is a charlatan or fraud. There are, in fact, excellent books out now by Dr. Mark Hyman, Casey and Calley Means and Dr. Peter Attia on longevity that have in depth and meaningful well-researched advice supported by science. Don’t bother reading this book.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Compassionate but accurate account of a southern working class upbringing
Revisado: 07-28-24
Inspirational along the lines of “Educated” but much more focused on the cultural and socio-economic issues in the southern white working class. Worth reading to understand the difficult life he and others have led and uplifting to the point of tears in many instances for how he pulled himself up by his bootstraps but with credit to the help he received along the way. Highly recommended.

Historia
If you don’t understand communist revolutions, you aren’t ready for what’s coming. The old rules are over. The old order is over. Accusations are evidence. Activism means bigotry and hate. Criminals are allowed to roam free. Citizens are locked up. An appetite for vengeance is unleashed—to deplatform, debank, destroy. This is the daily news, yet none of it’s new. Patterns from the past make sense of our present. They also foretell a terrifying future we might be condemned to endure.

An Epic Novel of the Vietnam Era in US history
Revisado: 03-09-24
The novel follows the sometimes excruciatingly difficult and sometimes joyous life of a young nurse, who served in Vietnam and the aftermath of her service. If you lived through that troubled time in the US, the extraordinary detail brings it all back. If not, it is a vital part of US history seen through the eyes of one woman but portraying the many incongruent facets of that time accurately. It should be required reading for young people who believe themselves to be the center of the universe.

Historia
The New York Times best-selling true story of an all-American girl and a boy from Zimbabwe and the letter that changed both of their lives forever. It started as an assignment. Everyone in Caitlin's class wrote to an unknown student somewhere in a distant place. Martin was lucky to even receive a pen-pal letter. There were only 10 letters, and 50 kids in his class. But he was the top student, so he got the first one. That letter was the beginning of a correspondence that spanned six years and changed two lives.
