Historia
Like every other hobbit, Bilbo Baggins likes nothing better than a quiet evening in his snug hole in the ground, dining on a sumptuous dinner in front of a fire. But when a wandering wizard captivates him with tales of the unknown, Bilbo becomes restless. Soon he joins the wizard’s band of homeless dwarves in search of giant spiders, savage wolves, and other dangers. Bilbo quickly tires of the quest for adventure and longs for the security of his familiar home. But before he can return to his life of comfort, he must face the greatest threat of all.

Classic
Revisado: 11-20-22
The Hobbit is a great book, and this version is very well preformed. The usual classic tale that most will know, but if not - it's a hero journey with great virtue and innocence. The characters affect the world and are also affected by the journey in ways that are healthy to reflect on and the reason I look to enjoy fantasy novels. Songs and poems were performed here in dramatic fashion that's impressive (I've not been able to do nearly as well when reading them aloud to my kids at night).
Highly recommend.

Historia
The sexual revolution—and the breakdown of the family—has brought misery to millions. In The Sexual State, Jennifer Roback Morse shows that the sexual revolution did not just “happen” like a force of nature. Rather, it was deliberately created by “elites”, harnessing the power of the state, allowing them inflict three false and calamitous ideologies—contraception, divorce, and gender—that have led to widespread and profound unhappiness, and worse.

Bold research, terrible narrator
Revisado: 09-23-22
This was a pretty interesting book. I'd seen Dr. Morse on youtube in a couple videos and had seen posts by her Ruth Institute before. This book has pretty interesting review of the sexual revolution showing how contraceptives were pushed through on Connecticut. The book isn't that long, it fairly academic.
Her positions are vastly divergent from the common position of today, but they are well reasoned and were also the commonly held position globally for hundreds of years before the sexual revolution. I listened while driving so may have to listen to it again to really absorb some of the content.
The narrator, Cloey Kelly, is terrible. Easily worst I've heard on Audible. Sure she struggles with the Latin names of Vatican Documents, but she also garbled Thomas Aquinas and some how pronounced Aristotle as Aristotle-"E". I couldn't believe an adult in modern west did not know that name.
Really a young person reading this book was a mistake anyway, Dr. Morse is pretty old now and listening to her speak there is a calm sagelike wisdom conveyed...Cloey sounded lost a times, detached at times, and overall far to young to convey any confidence in the words from the page.

Historia
In St. Augustine in 90 Minutes, Paul Strathern offers a concise, expert account of St. Augustine's life and ideas and explains their influence on man's struggle to understand his existence in the world. The book also includes selections from St. Augustine's work, a brief list of suggested readings for those who wish to delve deeper, and chronologies that place St. Augustine within his own age and in the broader scheme of philosophy.

Author clearly dislikes Augustin.
Revisado: 04-15-21
I've never heard an author insult a subject's major works, mother, and major works like Strathern does in this book.
Almost felt like reading a Jack Chic tract. Talks constantly about Augustine wasting his time on things that as a bishop was central to his job and life's focus. Calls his 2 major works unreadable despite there being many today who consider them essential reading.
Glad it was a free book, but with his very transparent bias, doubt I'll listen to the other free tracts of his I got access to.

Historia
Over the past hundred years, scholars have attacked the historical truth of the Gospels and argued that they were originally anonymous and filled with contradictions. In The Case for Jesus, Brant Pitre taps in to the wells of Christian scripture, history, and tradition to ask and answer a number of different questions, including: If we don't know who wrote the Gospels, how can we trust them? How are the four Gospels different from other Gospels, such as the lost Gospel of "Q" and the Gospel of Thomas?

Very impressed with this book.
Revisado: 08-15-20
Amazing book. When I first read "Mere Christianity" I found Lewis' classic 'Lord, liar, lunatic' argument lacking for just the reasons Dr. Pitre relates. I also had a very similar experience to his when taking my first college New Testament class, so I was pretty hooked on this book after the first chapter... but there is so much more amazing scholarship in here. Any Christian, and especially Catholics should read this book to learn a ton about there creation of the gospels, the opinions of the early Christians on scripture and to better understand the Jewish history, prophecies, and language of scripture.
There were a few tables or lists this book must have contained that did not translate well to audio, but this happened infrequently and it would typically be 20 seconds of names and scripture verses or something like that listed one after another. It was infrequent enough and brief enough that I do not this it should deter anyone from enjoying the other incredible portions of this book.
I would say after reading this book, I feel far more informed on the history of the gospels and am far more convinced that Jesus did claim he is God many times in all the gospels and that Christians from the earliest days believed he was divine. The book does not try to covert people, and I doubt it would bring many people into the Church. I do think it would greatly help assuage the fears/doubts of many Christians who have found messages from atheist/agnostic Bible scholars have started to increase their doubts about the authenticity of their scriptures.
This book doesn't claim to be all encompassing (frequently pointing out it's limitations) & I won't pretend I'm an expert now that I've read it. But I'm much more informed and inclined to read more in this area now.

Bland and underwhelming.
Revisado: 07-31-19
Not his best work. I've read several books by John Scalzi and he's never penned beautiful prose or gripping dialogue, but usually his work has a hook that draws me in...not so much in this one. Bland plot that is very much the middle of series, without much new compelling info added and no big plots resolved. His universe he made is full of formal titles, churches, offices and parliment; yet every single character hates the titles, curses like a sailor which everyone thinks is shocking despite it repeatedly haplening and has copious amounts of sex the reader/listener needs to trudge through. It's like Scalzi wants to lampoon govt or leadership, but what he created is so thin and flimsy there are no actually stuffy govt parliamentarians for these critiques to land on. Won't be continuing with this series except skimming a Wikipedia plot summary to see how it finishes out in 10 years.

Historia
A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old Devil to his nephew, Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man.

One if my 2 favorite CS Lewis books. I've always enjoyed the read and find this Blackstone Audio version an incredible recording. A great reflection on morality and a challenge to readers to avoid so many forms of temptation and evil.
