Historia
The principles of the French Revolution remain the only possible basis for a just society - even if, after more than 200 years, they are more contested than ever before. In A New World Begins, Jeremy D. Popkin offers a riveting account of the revolution that puts the listener in the thick of the debates and the violence that led to the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of a new society.

A woke history of the French Revolution
Revisado: 07-16-24
I've listened/read a significant amount of material about the FR, and never have I seen such a bending over to accommodate woke sensitivities. The author will go completely out of the way if an opportunity arises to bring up commentaries on some of the favorite topics du jour: feminism, racism, and homosexuality. Many other topics are much more germane to the FR at hand, but the inclusion and diversity department has to make its presence felt. Besides, I'm not sure that you can write a book about the FR nowadays and expect "educated" youngsters to read it if you don't go deep about their favorite topics since they've been mostly indoctrinated to see the world through woke lenses.
You will find that from the very beginning there will be phrases like "another strong and opinionated woman" when the author had not made any mention of strong and opinionated women before in the text, let alone the fact that such a woman is only mentioned casually once in that sentence but still the author considered it important to go out of the way and highlight those characteristics about her. Also, an individual who was a womanizer is described as considering his female partners "prey" when there are no hints whatsoever that this was his attitude and this is just implied because he was promiscuous. The author will never lose an opportunity to mention homosexual and racial affairs even if only remotely related to the topic at hand.
I've seen these same topics addressed in other material about the FR flawlessly, but in this case there is an obvious artificial effort to bring these tropics to the forefront and make them paramount to the history of the FR when they were of much lesser relevance (if at all) to the unfolding of the event. I just cannot stomach it.

An introduction to his masterpiece
Revisado: 12-13-20
As always with Becker: 50% of the time I'm asking myself: what is this guy's talking about with all this psychoanalytical mumbo jumbo? and then the rest 50% of the time I just stand in awe and wish I could say it with precisely those words. A must read if you have any philosophical inklings, and of course this is an introduction to his masterpiece. And remember: this the conclusions of Becker's line of thought is true for any sentient being, any locus of consciousness, no matter how advanced or godlike. Therefore would hold even if the technological apotheosis of mankind forecasted by the trashumanist movement/cult comes to happen. It could be said that it is "a feature of creatureliness".
Narration leaves a lot to be desired, so much so that only a true curiosity about his work would give you the strength to endure the dissonance that will be aroused in your auditory cortex.

Historia
The science fiction genre has become increasingly influential in mainstream popular culture, evolving into one of the most engaging storytelling tools we use to think about technology and consider the shape of the future. Along the way, it has also become one of the major lenses we use to explore important philosophical questions. The origins of science fiction are most often thought to trace to Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein, a story born from a night of spooky tale-telling by the fireside that explores scientific, moral, and ethical questions that were of great concern in the 19th century - and that continue to resonate today.

Weak philosophy loaded with misapplied facts and personal bias
- De KENDRA GOODMAN en 11-22-18
It only scratches the surface
Revisado: 06-14-18
It only scratches the surface of what the topic could yield, but the professor's time is clearly restrained as he mentions at the end of the course. If you're new to the concept of philosophy and are a science fiction buff the course is definitely worth it.

Historia
In Inhuman Bondage, David Brion Davis sums up a lifetime of insight. He looks at slavery in the American South; the rise of the Cotton Kingdom; the daily life of slaves; the destructive internal long-distance slave trade; the sexual exploitation of slaves; the emergence of an African-American culture; and much more. A definitive history by a writer deeply immersed in the subject, Inhuman Bondage links together the profits of slavery, the pain of the enslaved, and the legacy of racism.

Excellent, but focused on English-speaking regions
Revisado: 08-07-16
I wish the author would have dived more deeply into slavery in Latin America as the title suggests, and that's why I gave it a 4 star review. Other than that the book is a masterpiece on the phenomenon of slavery in North America and the British West Indies as well as the origins of New World slavery in the XVI century.

Excellent Course- Needs Battle Maps

Not about the the specifics of the battles
Revisado: 04-26-16
I liked it because I'm a history buff, but caveat emptor: it is 1/4 of the lecture (sometimes less) explaining the actual battle and 3/4 talking about the historical background, commanders, and other historical trivia related to the battles.
