Historia
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

truly life changing

death is the one thing we share with every living thing and yet we know so little about it. many find solace in religion and spirituality but it’s still something we fear. as someone who is unsure of where i stand religiously, who has struggled with an ED, who tends to compare my life to that of others, and who is growing as a person daily, this book has served as a much needed reassurance that life isn’t black and white. it doesn’t have to be heaven or nothing. the title of the book reflects the compromises we make on a daily basis and the way it was written forces the reader to love each patient, faults and all. we are all human and nothing makes that more evident than the experiences shown throughout this book. while no one i know is currently in hospice or close to death due to a medical reason, tomorrow isn’t promised and every word written here has helped me accept that and has encouraged me to be more present and has even affected my end of life plans whenever that time comes. thank you hadley for all you’ve done to your patients and those of us who have heard your stories.

Historia
Shari Franke’s childhood was a constant battle for survival. Her mother, Ruby Franke, enforced a severe moral code while maintaining a façade of a picture-perfect family for their wildly popular YouTube channel 8 Passengers, which documented the day-to-day life of raising six children for a staggering 2.5 million subscribers. But a darker truth lurked beneath the surface—Ruby’s wholesome online persona masked a more tyrannical parenting style than anyone could have imagined.

this book took me through a roller coaster of emotions, many of which i didn’t expect to come up. i’m glad i got to hear this story from the authors pov only hearing what she felt comfortable sharing and am glad to know that given all the bad, the franke family is rebuilding their lives, hopefully privately and away from the prying eyes of the public, myself included. i wish them the best moving forward and hope they find the healing they deserve

enlightening and sad all at once

this is beautifully written, raw, and as real as real gets. the author does a fantastic job showing the good, the bad, the ugly, and everything in between. she doesn’t shy away from her internal struggles through this journey and i was on the edge of my seat the whole time. her story is terrifying and so important. i would definitely recommend this book to anyone with even a mild interest in non fiction

couldn’t stop listening

the way this was written is phenomenal, it wasn’t entirely the kind of book i was wanting to read but it was impossible to put down nonetheless. the plot was engaging and while i’m not well versed in psychological/ suspenseful books i found the plot to be quite unique. would definitely recommend for someone wanting a fairly quick book to get through with a mystery aspect to it, however, please look for trigger warnings before you read as certain parts mention sensitive topics (in a respectful and well informed manner, but still) i also love how this book portrays the reality of a lot of psychiatric facilities and the restrictions they face when it comes to funding and social stigma
