Historia
From the author of the critically acclaimed bestseller, Scent of the Missing, comes a heartwarming and inspiring story that shows how dogs can be rescued and can rescue in return. For her first book, Susannah Charleson was praised for her unique insight into the kinship between humans and dogs, as revealed through canine search and rescue. In The Possibility Dogs Charleson chronicles her journey into the world of psychiatric-service and therapy dogs trained to serve the human mind, a journey that began as a personal one. After a particularly grisly search led to a struggle with PTSD, Charleson credits healing to her partnership with search dog Puzzle. Inspired by that experience and having met dogs formally trained to assist in such crises, Charleson learns to identify abandoned dogs with service potential, often plucking them from shelters at the last minute, and to train them for work beside hurting partners, to whom these second-chance dogs bring intelligence, comfort, and hope.

In turns moving, hilarious, and fascinating. Beautifully read. Recommending it to anyone curious about dogs and/or mental illness, but really it's a book anyone seems likely to enjoy. Entirely wonderful.

Historia
Ted Kerasote met and adopted Merle, a Labrador mix, while he was on a camping trip. Merle had been living in the wild, and after taking the dog home with him to Wyoming, Kerasote soon realized that Merle could not adjust to inhabiting exclusively the human world. So he put a door in his house to let Merle live both outside and in. A deeply touching portrait of a remarkable animal, Merle's Door explores the issues that all animals and their human companions face.

I'm glad I read it, but...
Revisado: 01-01-19
as others have mentioned, the author betrays his smugness by continually speaking in French and Spanish (then translating), which is most absurd when he pretends that the dog is doing the same. He also flaunts his various other good fortunes (name dropping his Subaru, his world travels, his outdoor achievements) in a way that made me roll my eyes frequently. The narrator's attempts at accents were pretty painful, but somehow those seemed consistent with how I would imagine this author speaking.
That said, Merle is awesome. I'm glad to have heard his story. I just wish someone had more heavily edited for tone.

very useful
Revisado: 11-07-18
A bit repetitive at times, but really transformative. the ups (showing you how to have a positive relationship with a will trained dog) definitely outweigh the downs (trite examples using tired stereotypes of the nuclear family, feeling like it was written in the '80s, unrealistic expectations for anticipating problems and available time).

Historia
It is the spring of 1802, and the village of Paradise is still reeling from the typhoid epidemic of the previous summer. Elizabeth and Nathaniel Bonner have lost their two-year-old son, Hannah’s half brother Robbie, but they struggle on as always: the men in the forests, the twins Lily and Daniel in Elizabeth’s school, and Hannah as a doctor in training, apprenticed to Richard Todd. Hannah is descended from healers on both sides - one Scots grandmother and one Mohawk - and her reputation as a skilled healer in her own right is growing.

Historia
In Evicted, Princeton sociologist and MacArthur “Genius” Matthew Desmond follows eight families in Milwaukee as they each struggle to keep a roof over their heads. Hailed as “wrenching and revelatory” (The Nation), “vivid and unsettling” (New York Review of Books), Evicted transforms our understanding of poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving one of twenty-first-century America’s most devastating problems. Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible.

I really wanted to like it
Revisado: 01-19-17
This work is a series of case summaries, not a practical or analytical piece. As a representation or "inside look" at poverty, it's very effective. As a listener, though, I just felt frustrated, waiting for the "so now what". Honestly, I couldn't finish it. Big caveat, though: For what it is (an inside view of poverty and housing) it's exceptional. I was just really hoping for more.

Couldn't even finished it. Romance novels do not need to play up every possible stereotype of the dark brooding oversized warrior prince sheltering a bruised and tender heart. Oh, and daddy problems. Just too much.

Historia
This second volume in William Manchester's three-volume biography of Winston Churchill challenges the assumption that Churchill's finest hour was as a wartime leader. During the years 1932-1940, he was tested as few men are. Pursued by creditors (at one point he had to put up his home for sale), he remained solvent only by writing an extraordinary number of books and magazine articles.

Managed to ignore the narrator around hour 25
Revisado: 10-27-16
But it truly did feel like a great loss to have such a tremendous work and man represented so poorly. For a long time I thought the narrator was intentionally mocking Churchill. Thankfully, by the very end I was able to fully tune out the tone and focus on the riveting prose.

Master of the Senate, told with an abundance of rich detail that could only have come from Caro’s peerless research, is both a galvanizing portrait of the man himself—the titan of Capital Hill, volcanic, mesmerizing—and a definitive and revelatory study of the workings and personal and legislative power.

As good as those before it
Revisado: 07-07-16
Audible's 3-credits-for-1-book thing aside (and an explanation for that is in order, at minimum), Caro continues to deliver amazing work. Yes, it's occasionally repetitive and even strident; yes, it hammers on Johnson's faults and even seems relieved to turn to other characters' back stories; but it's just so massively researched that I'll take the quirks. What an education this series provides!

Fantastic story with awkward Christian thread
Revisado: 04-26-16
If you could sum up Dawn of Wonder in three words, what would they be?
Beautiful and exciting coming-of-age tale.
Any additional comments?
Riveting and fun, with a new world and adventures of every kind. Very creative and often amusing. I docked one star for the story because the climactic moments were transformed into painfully obvious Christian parables, blunting the power of the story. It was slightly amusing to have The Ancient (read: "The Almighty") beam up the main character in a shaft of light and find forgiveness and mercy at the throne of god, but it mostly felt forced and awkward. It was a disappointing note in an otherwise beautiful tale.
