As a fan of the author for a long time, I had looked forward to reading this book. It turned out to be a total let down; fell far below expectation. The narrator was dry and nearly monotone. There wasn’t a single piece of new information in this book. It was the same ‘ole, same ‘ole. The story was boring and moved slowly. It was a total waste of time and money.

There wasn’t a lot, maybe none, new jaw dropping information revealed. Instead, the book more or less confirmed what we knew or had at the time suspected. Partly, that included the wave of trump support, along with White House appointees and staff who exited quickly after the November election loss. The overall reaction illuminates how alone and lost he was as everyone hid in the bunkers, avoided contact, then finally abandoned trump. Even so, his petty, intentionally hurtful rhetoric continued full strength, almost without pause to take a breath. It is a stark reality that trump was at that time a man without a country but he didn’t notice. That is, his mode of operation and habits remained unchanged. The read was smooth and worthwhile. I appreciate the author’s writing style as it doesn’t waste my time with word filler or fluff. The story is written and presented in a precise manner.

This review is made on Jan. 8, 2021. It follows the insurrection two days ago when domestic terrorists stormed the sacred House Chamber on Capitol Hill screaming for the Vice President of the United States to be hanged and death to Madam Secretary Nancy Pelosi. I had finished reading this book 3 days earlier. The words — warnings about Donald J. Trump, his erratic and dangerous actions, blared in my head as I watched horrendous images on the television screen. I had a sudden urge to turn it off; shut out the sounds and sights of the outcome. When it was broadcast that the VP and Speaker were safely secured in a bunker, I knew that I could remain to be a witness among billions to the end. It was all, every single raised finger and nose twitch, predictable and it had been written on the pages of this book. Incompetency, ignorance, and greed nearly took democracy from the United States of America. There won’t be a second chance. Special thanks to the staff who removed the certified electoral votes and kept them out of the sight and from the grip of criminals. My sympathy is heartfelt to the family of Brian D. Sicknick, the Capitol Policeman whose life was taken not by God, but by the evil that surrounded him.

I will update this review later but want to put it out there now because of the public's rush to get the book. Yes, I too rushed to preorder it. I had great expectations. Too bad. So far, every chapter I've read turns out to be about the same as the one before. There has been minimal, if any, useful information. The narration is performed in a matter-of-fact, almost monotone, voice without an ounce of passion or interest shown. The narrator clearly wants the book over as much as the listener! The book is so boring it makes me want to pull out my hair. I mean, the subject of the book is the craziest of crazy, orange-topped, Mad Hatter tRrrump. So, how in the world could anyone with a brain, just totally eff up a story about him and March Hare John Kelley? tRrrump and Kelley must have surely celebrated many unbirthdays together. Still, Bolton missed the story! The fact that he did so underscores the lack luster way he functioned while in the administration. Moreover, it verifies that Bolton never had an inkling about tRrrump's mind or how he operated. Instead, Bolton tried to put the administration into imaginary slots from prior bureaucrats in other administrations. (Round peg in square hole.) tRrrump was "in his face" before Bolton signed on but Bolton never figured out that he was dealing with a real live trust fund baby and true looney tune. Never. Not even to this day. I repeat: this is the most boring, uninteresting book ever. So? I paid a lot of money for this piece of ignorance.

I'll sum up this book in three words: Holy xucking xhit! I'll knock out the narration review first. As in every other way, Darrell did not follow the rule, i.e., an author shouldn't narrate his own writing. He tossed that one and proceeded forward at 100 mph. It's the same thing he's done in every situation his entire life. It may be his signature. Still, nobody could have narrated this story but Darrell. It was imperative for him to do it. Through his voice, he brought reality, sincerity, comic relief, and a knowingness that we all have a future. Darrell's voice leads the reader beyond a sense of hope. It secures certainty. So, good job Darrell. As usual, you pulled a rabbit out of a hat you weren't wearing. Darrell's story line was not awesome. It was chilling, horrible, and tragic. I had hundreds of questions that needed to be answered. Maybe those could be summed up to: "How could this happen?" I often teared up, looked away, and paused reading. Fortunately, there was comic relief. Thank you Darrell for putting in the right amount to balance all of the heart wrenching saga. Well, almost all. Well, no; not even close. Thank you, anyway. Darrell is ultra famous because of his brain, skill, and talent. He's nice looking, financially secure, and has relationships with people who would drop most jaws, He was an heir apparent to a perfect life except Darrell struggled with a strong belief that he had no worth. I had a love-hate relationship with Darrell, his story, and this book. It made me laugh harder than I'd ever laughed; fill with sorrow and rage. It freaking wore me out. Darrell was well worth saving. His family, friends, and strangers desperately need him. I wish getting where he is now could have been easier. I know the argument is that he had to do what he did to get where he is but I'm not so sure about that. It doesn't change my wish anyway. Was it absolutely necessary for Darrell's tiny self to be shattered into so many pieces it would take the remainder of his life to find them? If so, it's a harsh reality to swallow.

The author, who is also the narrator, does a good job of pinpointing accountability and once pinpointed, doesn't allow any wriggle room to escape. Farrow, yes-- he's Mia's son -- is exceptionally bright, well educated, and has a law degree. He found his path in journalism. However, his analytical thinking surely must have been honed in a Torts class. I became his partner, a bit of a co-author, throughout the chapters. Each time he hit a brick wall, I felt the blow too; all the way to my gut. His advocacy for Harvey Weinstein's thrown-away mechanical women, whose creation was for perversion-- only a cut above a blow up doll, was apparent. Also, it looked like Farrow personally struggled to balance feelings against the task imposed by investigative journalism. He clearly was influenced by his Sister's allegations against Woody. I don't think it far fetched that he's probably a Mama's boy but in a sweet, unharmful way. Overall, he did a superb job of bringing light to the struggle of sexual assault victims and the ugly maze of difficulties thrown at the person whose mission is to out a rich, powerful, and famous victimizer who has been successful in keeping a lid on explosives for over 30 years. Without Farrow's stick-to-it determination, coupled with confidence in himself, this story could never have been verified to the degree he did nor the exoneration of victims mentioned. Weinstein's victims didn't stand a chance against the Weinstein well-oiled machine, which included a bottomless pit of money. It's a rollercoaster ride to the shared victory as the bulldog tugs on the string from a ball of yarn, while unwinding a lot of surprises. Good job, Farrow.

There is so much information in this book that it takes a lot of effort and thought to keep the people and data straight. It is very disarming and troubling. It discloses substantial economic assets about the highest and most powerful world leaders from many countries. It's a who's who and how-to navigate and secrete treasures. The amount of funds attributed per person or company is too much to wrap my head around. Hulu has a documentary about the Panama Papers. It closely follows the book. I was glad that I had read the book before watching the documentary (which I saw twice). This is a worthwhile read.

I was a little resistant to invest in yet another tell-all on tRrrump. I saw the author interviewed a couple of times and became interested. Although truly I'm not crazy about Wolfe, I like his writing style and feel he presents facts and not opinions without identifying them as such. He certainly stays within the ethical lines. He did the narration and it was so, so much better than I expected. It was actually excellent. In spite of myself, I dove in and couldn't put the book down. It was worth every penny and minute that I spent. There is a good deal of information that I'd not heard before from any source and I have read a lot of books on this subject. So, yeah-- buy it. You'll be glad you did.

There's really nothing redeemable about any part of this book. I am terribly disappointed in it. The story is almost abstract. What I mean is, you never get to the meat of an issue; just conclusions after repetition and going 'round and 'round the mountain. The narration is enough to make the reader pull out her hair. Think fingernails and chalkboard. I'm really sorry I wasted my money buying this pile of words. If I'd had any idea, I would have invested my bucks in helping the homeless.

The interesting matters in this book can be contained in a thimble. Seriously. OMG-- I thought it would never end. Andy McCabe's monotonous, emotionless reading from his manuscript sent me out the door screaming one-third way through. (I mean, there's a difference in story telling and reading a book while reading a book. Geeezzz!) I just refused to give up that soon-- by gosh, if it was published there surely must be a hidden treasure, right? Nooooo. Same story with the hope of a secret horse in the barn full of manure. It's m.a.n.u.r.e. I do not recommend this book. How can you have a successful wife (politician and doctor) and a couple of kids but there's not a single illustration of family humor? That family should be rocking and rolling in fun and funnies. Too personal? Well, Andy-- then don't tell "your" story because you aren't living in a capsule. You need to go back to the drawing board. Either you allowed the FBI to totally sanitize YOUR story or your story was never worth repeating in the first place. I hope you read this awful review 'cause you made a dollar off me that you didn't deserve.
