Historia
Ngaio Marsh’s most popular novel begins when a young New Zealander’s first contact with the English gentry is the body of Lord Wutherford - with a meat skewer through the eye.... The Lampreys had plenty of charm - but no cash. They all knew they were peculiar - and rather gloried in it. The double and triple charades, for instance, with which they would entertain their guests - like rich but awful Uncle Gabriel, who was always such a bore.

This is so much better than I expected
Revisado: 09-08-24
I had seen and heard the BBC tv/radio adaptations of this book and didn't enjoy either of them. So I initially skipped this book when listening thru the series. When I decided to listen the second time around I was presently surprised at how much better it was than I expected! The characters, the plot, and the narration combine to make this one of my favorite Ngaio Marsh offerings.

Historia
In the Welsh borders, isolated by heavy snow and flooding from the thaw, cut off from telephone access, a tragedy has occurred. Old Dr Robinson known to be 'a menace' on the roads has met his end in a car crash, his big saloon thrown from the track down the steep hillside. But when the police arrive there is more to the tragedy than meets the eye: why was there a second body - an outsider to these parts - in the back of the vehicle?

great story and narrator
Revisado: 04-19-24
ECR Lorac/Carol Carnac is a mystery writer of the golden age who has been sadly overlooked! I'm so glad that more and more of her books and more audiobooks are being published or back in print. This was a compelling story that was wonderfully narrated. I can only hope that Audible will produce more of her books, and with narration this good.

Historia
The Second World War is drawing to a close. Nicholas Vaughan, released from the army after an accident, takes refuge in Devon renting a thatched cottage in the beautiful countryside at Mallory Fitzjohn. Hard work and rural peace seem to make this a happy bachelor life. On a nearby farm lives the bored, flirtatious June St Cyres, an exile from London while her husband is a Japanese POW. June’s presence attracts fashionable visitors of dubious character and threatens to spoil Vaughan’s prized seclusion. When Little Thatch is destroyed in a blaze, all Vaughan’s work goes up in smoke, and Inspector Macdonald is drafted in to uncover a motive for murder.

Readers were not up to the price Audible exacts
Revisado: 11-08-22
Muir's writings are not for the causal reader. My review reflects more the shortcomings of the readers; apparently they are volunteers. I believe this same title is offered for free at the Librivox site, which I wish I had known before purchasing from Audible. They struggle with words like indefatigable and en masse, as well as pronunciations of plants, flowers, etc.... A shame, as the content of Muir's journals, and his writings, deserve a better, more professional treatment.

Historia
Horace Rumpole, the irreverent, iconoclastic, claret-swilling, poetry-spouting barrister at law, is among the most beloved characters of English crime literature. He is not a particularly gifted attorney, nor is he particularly fond of the law by courts if it comes to that, but he’d rather be swinging at a case than bowing to his wife Hilda, She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed.

tend at times to distract from his performance. Nothing that can't be tolerated, but when someone reads so well the production should support it. I'm a Rumpole fan so of course, loved the story.
