One of the best Boyd storylines, but...
Revisado: 12-19-24
Enjoyed the spy storyline and mysterious directions the book took along the way. George Blagden makes the book better with his superb narration. However, there is a glaring problem with a location that is mentioned several times and becomes part of the story. You would think as an author who writes a great deal historical fiction, Boyd (and his editor/fact checkers) would have researched and discovered that Hattiesburg, Mississippi, is in no way on or even near the Mississippi River. It's located in the southern center of the state, about 140 miles or 2.5 hours from the Mississippi River. Hard to really take the entire facts or locations in the storyline seriously with such a massive error.

First book was a fun read, but this one way too long and tiresome. Should have been cut by 3/4 and been a novella.

Barnett Durang has a secret. No, not THAT secret. His widowed mother has long known he’s gay. The secret is Barnett is getting married. At his mother’s farm. In their small Louisiana town. She just doesn’t know it yet. It’ll be an intimate affair. Just two hundred or so of the most fabulous folks Barnett is shipping in from the “heathen coasts,” as Mom likes to call them, turning her quiet rescue farm for misfit animals into a most unlikely wedding venue.

Needs an editor...and more
Revisado: 06-22-24
I thoroughly enjoyed the author's first book, but I was embarrassed for him with Big Gay Wedding. It literally took me over a year to finish. I decided to finish a few weeks ago just to get it out of my library, and to see how it would end. Too long. Too repetitive. Too many talking animals. Too many bizarre tangents. The book should have ended at the wedding, but no - it had to go into a talking to the reader dying sheep to end the story. Usually Noah is a great narrator, but this time it was grating. However, I think that had to do with the talking animals, unlikable characters and the way too long length. This book needed an editor in the worse way.

As an elite assassin for the CIA, Helen Warwick was trained to keep a low profile. But now that she's retired, she's forced to take on a very different, and very public, role—as the proud mother of a rising young politician. At a DC press conference for her son's campaign, she sees the ominous green light of a gun laser fixed on her son's head, and her CIA training kicks in. She jumps into action, pushes her son down, and saves him from a sniper's bullet. In that moment, Helen realizes she will never escape the secrets of her past—or the deranged man she thought she killed.

My favorite new series. Helen is one of the best female characters in a long long time. Action packed. Riveting. Edge of your seat. Keeps you guessing. I need the third book soon and a series with maybe Jodie Foster as Helen.

DNF after half way through.
Revisado: 08-11-23
I really enjoyed Lange's first book, We Are the Brennans, but I couldn't even finish this book. I've read/listened to over 85 books so far this year, and this by far was the worst. I'm not sure if this was written and published quickly to take advantage of the great buzz from Brennan's...but this was really bad. One dimensional characters. Poorly constructed storyline that you could tell what was going to happen after the first three chapters. Frustrating character development and dialogue. Save yourself a credit. This is the first book of 2023 that I did not finish. Even Barrie's narration couldn't save it.

Couldn't finish
Revisado: 09-24-21
My first review after over 250 books. Couldn't finish. Sounded like a fun escape since I live in Italy most of the time. However - one dimensional characters, horrific stereotypes, terrible narration, and the worst Italian accents in any book I've listened to. Save yourself a credit. Just don't. It's been done better by so many other writers.
