Historia
Isolated by Mexico's deadly Copper Canyons, the blissful Tarahumara Indians have honed the ability to run hundreds of miles without rest or injury. In a riveting narrative, award-winning journalist and often-injured runner Christopher McDougall sets out to discover their secrets. In the process, he takes his readers from science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultra-runners are pushing their bodies to the limit.

Ultra-marathons and evolutionary anthropology
Revisado: 03-12-23
Enjoyed this book a lot. Truly entertaining, story around a campfire kind of narration.
The book tells of star ultra races and athletes, but also of the history of running, the relationship between modern running shoes and rise in injuries, the Rarámuri people of northern Mexico, and an account from the point of view of evolutionary anthropology of how we have evolved to run long distances.
Will definitely listen to this again.

Historia

Tenoch me conmovió.

Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Thorough and inspiring work.
Revisado: 08-04-22
One of the best pieces of historical research / investigative journalism I've ever seen. Every part of Oppenheimer's life is well documented with quotes from letters, official documents, and interviews with the people present.
Oppenheimer was indeed an extraordinary man. The likes of which the world rarely sees. He gave humanity the bomb and lived the rest of his life advocating for such a weapon not to be used. Just like Prometheus, he was punished. Not by the gods, but by the very government he diligently served. This biography is not only thorough and extremely well researched but also absolutely inspiring.

Historia
In the United States, teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time, and office workers average only three minutes. Like so many of us, Johann Hari was finding that constantly switching from device to device and tab to tab was a diminishing and depressing way to live. He tried all sorts of self-help solutions—even abandoning his phone for three months—but nothing seemed to work. So Hari went on an epic journey across the world to interview the leading experts on human attention—and he discovered that everything we think we know about this crisis is wrong.

An important, dare I say imperative book to read.
Revisado: 07-27-22
Rarely do I stumble upon a book discussing something so important that I believe more people should read and talk about it. Not for its effect on personal well-being but for the conversation's effect on humanity and the world. This is that book.

Historia
Nobody needs telling there isn’t enough time. We’re obsessed with our lengthening to-do lists, our overfilled inboxes, work-life balance, and the ceaseless battle against distraction; and we’re deluged with advice on becoming more productive and efficient, and “life hacks” to optimize our days. But such techniques often end up making things worse. The sense of anxious hurry grows more intense, and still the most meaningful parts of life seem to lie just beyond the horizon.

Treats the root causes of our anxieties about time
Revisado: 11-22-21
Not another productivity hack book. Instead, it explores our relationship with the passage of time and the finitude of our existence, and all those things we do to try to "manage" our time, using it as a resource instead of the very substance of our existence.
If you one of those people (as I've been) who perpetualy (and often unsuccessfully) try to have some control over their time, you might enjoy this book.

Historia
With growing academic responsibilities, family commitments, and inboxes, scholars are struggling to fulfill their writing goals. A finished book - or even steady journal articles - may seem like an impossible dream. But, as Joli Jensen proves, it really is possible to write happily and productively in academe. Jensen begins by busting the myth that universities are supportive writing environments. She points out that academia, an arena dedicated to scholarship, offers pressures that actually prevent scholarly writing.

Honest account of academic writing challenges.
Revisado: 11-14-21
I'm a graduate physics student writing my thesis and first journal publication. This book has been so helpful. It deals with the very specific challenges of academia, some of which I had never even recognized. The author writes about the academic environment in an honest and humane way, and gives real practical advise to get the writing done. Will recommend to all of my colleagues.
