Historia
For millennia, humankind and the other intelligent races have studied the bizarre and unfathomable constructs of the legendary beings known as the Builders. But for all that study, they are still no closer to figuring out who - or what - the Builders have been, or where they have gone.

Monotone Narrator
Revisado: 02-27-24
Gave up. Sounds like an interesting story, but I found I could not focus on the monotone narration and had to rewind so much I gave it up. Give a good listen first to see if he works for you. It’s a long book.

Part 1 of a novel. Does not stand alone.
Revisado: 08-15-21
I don’t know why Audible formats this as 4 stories. Very misleading. It is a novel and the formatting is confusing. The Part # could at least be in the title so it is clear. The story is gripping. Some expressions and observations are repeated far too many times. All in all, Enjoyable.

Some expressions and observations are repeated far too many times. The recording is miked differently which is distracting. All in all, Enjoyable.

Historia
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

A New King Classic
Revisado: 02-11-20
Great narration. And full of interesting characters, a Steven King trademark. King can often set up a tense situation, fill it with dramatic characters, and then blow the ending. Not this one. It's a new classic.

Fiver could sense danger. Something terrible was going to happen to the warren; he felt sure of it. They had to leave immediately. So begins a long and perilous journey of survival for a small band of rabbits. As the rabbits skirt danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band, its humorous characters, and its compelling culture, complete with its own folk history and mythos. Fiver’s vision finally leads them to Watership Down, an upland meadow. But here they face their most difficult challenges of all.

Riveting
Revisado: 02-11-20
I read this in print in the 70's, and I wondered if it would still be as good as I remembered it now that I am older, and a more critical reader. It is every bit as good as my memory of it. The language is beautiful, the characters are well developed, the world building is believable. And in this audiobook, the performance by Peter Capaldi is magic. His various colorful voices for all the rabbits bring them to life with personality and individual character. I've listened to hundreds of books. This is one of my favorite performances.

I tried but could not stay with this one. I think it is the narration. I couldn't believe either of these guys could possibly care a filp for this woman. She must be so good looking they don't care. But that doesn't come across in the story.

Quite a thriller
Revisado: 04-02-16
I read this when I learned it is on David Foster Wallace's unusual top ten list. It is quite a thriller. It is set in the 70's. Hannibal Lector appears as a side character and helps, in a way, to catch another cannibal murderer. The reader has a clear resonate voice but gives intimate exchanges between romantic partners an irritating pleading whine I associate with children instead of adults. The story has enough narrative drive to overcome that bit of the performance.

Historia
Harlan Ellison has won more awards for imaginative literature than any other living author, but only aficionados of Ellison’s singular work have been aware of another of his passions…he is a great oral interpreter of his stories. His recordings have been difficult to obtain…by his choice. In 1999, for the first time, he was lured into the studio to record this stunning retrospective.

Very dark
Revisado: 02-19-16
"I Have No Mouth..." is a perfect, horrific story. All of these stories are dark, some downright nihilistic. I loved these in my youth, but now see many of them as ugly jewels. Still, a fascinating read. The audio recording doesn't serve Ellison well. It should have been equalized to even-out the broad range of highs and lows. Ellison moves from a whisper to a shout, often in the same sentence. The performance is energetic and compelling; the recording is problematic. It is best to listen over a speaker, rather than earbuds, due to the dynamic range.

Winner of the 1961 Hugo Award for Best Novel and widely considered one of the most accomplished, powerful, and enduring classics of modern speculative fiction, Walter M. Better in print, I believe
Revisado: 10-03-15
Confusing story. I missed that the book time shifts 600 years into the future - twice. I understood that the story moved ahead, but 600 years!? I think part of the confusion is the narrator's limited character voices, so it sounds like the exact same people in the different eras. After reading reviews on Goodreads I understood and liked the book much more.
This is not the best way to read this classic of science fiction, I think.
