Historia
Haven’s Rock is a sanctuary town hidden deep in the Yukon for those who need to disappear from the regular world. Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, are starting a family now that they’ve settled into their life here. As Casey nears the end of her pregnancy, she lets nothing, including her worried husband, stop her from investigating what happens in the forbidden forest outside the town of Haven’s Rock. When one of the town's residents is drugged and wanders too close to the edge of town, she’s dragged into the woods kicking and screaming.

Historia
Once upon a time, in the magical land of San Francisco, there lived a not-so-ordinary girl named Laurel Pettigrew. She was supposed to be the Chosen One. The plan was simple: She would vanquish the great evil Tybus in an epic battle. But destiny had other ideas, and Laurel's performance in the whole heroics department was a colossal flop. Now, instead of being a legendary hero, Laurel's the resident pariah of the magic realm. And what’s worse, the dark wizard Tybus swooped in, took over the realm, and forced all supernatural creatures to live under his tyrannical rule.

I’m really disappointed. The acting was so over the top it felt hamhanded and overdone. I love all of these actors, so I’m truly disappointed. Their performances were nuance free. A director could have hauled them in, but something obviously happened. The story was cobbled together and lacked magic. Not sure why it didn’t work, but it really didn’t.
After trying, I just couldn't get past listening for the first hour and a half. It was really cringeworthy. There is a reason why some actors are called hams. Soooo...I called Audible and returned it. I just couldn't take any more wink, wink, nudge, nudges.

Great Story

Awesome book, great narration. My only regret is that it is a self contained story that wrapped up neatly and won’t require a sequel.

Few people know the name Vesper Quill. To most folks, I’m just a lowly lab rat who designs brewmakers and other household appliances in the research-and-development lab at the powerful Kent Corp. But when I point out a design flaw and a safety hazard in the new line of Kent Corp spaceships, everyone knows who I am—and wants to eliminate me. I might be a seer with a photographic memory, but I don’t see the trouble headed my way until it’s too late. Suddenly, I’m surrounded by enemies and fighting for my life.

Science Fiction Needs Science
Revisado: 08-05-23
Normally, Jennifer Estep is one of my favorite authors. I automatically buy whatever she writes and I've relistened to several of her series more than a few times. But while she excels at fantasy, science fiction requires the rules of science to be applied. The descriptions of wood cabinets, real books, and a full gym on a small spaceship boggles the mind. As does the full shower. In space. Leading to a convenient "whoops" moment, where the heroine walks in on the hero. I just kept thinking that if she wasn't aware of the science, perhaps she could have paid attention to Star Wars or Star Trek or any of a dozen other space faring stories out there. This one just didn't make sense to the genre.
The narration was excellent.

Great Book!
Revisado: 12-27-22
Ignore the other reviews, this was a great listen. Admittedly, this is my first book by this particular author, so I had no preconceived expectations. That being the case, the premise was highly enjoyable. I enjoyed the story and the narration. Both were well done.

Good story, Interesting world building
Revisado: 04-06-22
I was surprised by this story. I wasn't sure I was going to like it and then I got caught up in the world building and wanted to find out more about the floating court and life behind the scenes of New Orleans. Wish it was part of a series because I would love to read more of Kai's adventures. It just feels so unfinished to leave it off with one story alone. Well done!

Sound effects and music drown out the dialogue
Revisado: 05-12-21
I had to stop listening before the end of the first episode. I'm sure everyone was doing their very best acting, but one must bear in mind the audience. Between all of the sound effects and the dramatic music, it was drowning out the dialogue. I found myself straining to hear and understand the dialogue. I finally gave up because the spoken words were not as loud as the music and the sound effects. When I felt myself searching for closed captioning, that was it. For goodness sakes, balance the sound, please!!
After pondering this for several hours, I'm adding a bit more. The actors were obviously having a great time. I think the story is probably something that I would have enjoyed. However the barrage of noise completely drowned out the story telling. It did remind me of old time radio serials. But as stated earlier, it drowned out the narrative. If the sound engineer had reduced the volume on the music and sound effects, it would have been much more enjoyable. But as it is, I will not be completing it.

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

Great Story!!
Revisado: 05-03-21
As remarked by other commenters, this is more of a novella than a full novel. That caveat aside, it is superior storytelling. I know my own listening preferences, so by the time I started this series, I had all 6 books that allow me to move from one book to the next. It is the mark of an excellent storyteller than I am thoroughly enjoying the journey. My funny bone is continually being tickled by this robot who is adverse to human interaction being hooked on soap operas and basing his reactions to situations to the lessons learned there. The sheer absurdity is delicious!
