This was a slow, meandering story. It was simply listening to someone reminiscing about the past and trying to understand how that past has shaped them in the present. While interesting, it was not a book that gripped my attention.

The author, Ishiguro, was able to develop the characters and make them feel like real individuals that you could run into on the street. Yet, the premise, the boarding school and the mysterious donations left me wondering and feeling like there was a purposeful omission of important facts to try and build curiosity or strong emotion in the reader. It didn't work for me.

I liked this book. It told the story of three friends that on the surface seemed to have idyllic lives , but were facing hardships they did not share. The plot was interesting and the characters defined. The message was clear: no one's life is perfect.

I found this book to be disturbing in a good way. It took me a long time to listen to The Handmaid’s Tale after I purchased it, as I knew it would be a thought-provoking book, but I am glad I did finally read it. It made me analyze how people can be thrown into situations and have no way to change their circumstances so that life becomes a daily choice: live this way or die.

I am glad that I listened to this book rather than reading it as the way it was written lent itself to this format. Claire Danes was fantastic.

I found this book to be lacking that little something that draws you in and makes you want to continue reading. The way the plot focused on the petty struggles of the wealthy and real struggles of the poor was too dramatic and seemed more like a caricature than a look into small town life. The characters fell flat and I couldn’t manage to care about their experiences. It was obvious what role each character was assigned and what part they would play in the big ending. I did not care for this book and would not recommend reading it.

I am not a scientist, not even close. I barely passed high school chemistry and only vaguely remember the periodic table. Yet, I have always like scientific concepts and history. I found this book fascinating. I learned so much about the periodic table in a fun and interesting manner. I loved the history and anecdotes behind the discovery of the elements. It was through this story telling that I was able to really understand and appreciate the science of the periodic table and elements. I truly recommend this book.

I enjoyed the analysis of how we make decisions. Jonah Lehrer was able to make what could have been a boring subject interesting through providing stories/anecdotes as examples to explain decision-making and how it occurs in a variety of situations.

I loved this story. I was one of those books in which I was sad every time I had to stop listening. I'd even drive the long way home just to get some extra listening time in. I liked the main characters and looked forward to finding out about them and their lives. Both women, far from perfect, were forced to deal with life events beyond their control. I found Anthony’s story fascinating. It was a point of view that I have never encountered. The book contained a great deal of humor, friendship, discovery and pain. After finishing the story, and now months later, I have a feeling of missing these characters and hoping that they have found happiness.

Breakfast with Buddha was a fun and thought-provoking book. I like how the characters were thrown together and how their personalities are so opposed at the start of the story. As the road trip progresses they have many funny experiences, I laughed out loud quiet a few times. There is a side to the story that encourages you to look at the world and think about your personal beliefs without ever feeling preachy or telling you how to react to the ideas presented. I really enjoyed the story and found myself wishing I was on that road trip and going bowling with Rinpoche.

I liked this book more than I thought I would. I am an extrovert, although I do share a few traits with introverts. I chose to read this book to better understand my students, colleagues and friends that are introverts. It was eye opening to learn how much extroversion is prized and the stress that can put on introverts. I was pleasantly surprised at how both sides of the introvert/extrovert personality was considered and discussed. I felt that I was able to not only better understand others but also myself. I finished this book with a sense of how important it is to be open and interested in others and to see their strengths in order to create strong friendships and working relationships. And yes, I am trying to slow down, wait, listen, and shut up once in awhile to let the introverts in my life have time to think and share… if they want to.

This book was interesting. I liked it better than the first book, A Discovery of Witches. The plot was interesting and not always predictable. The characters were more fully developed, and it did a great job in setting up the events for the last book in this series. Overall a nice read.

The audio was fine.
