It must be said out front that if you don’t like baseball — if you aren’t moved by the beauty of the game — this book is probably not for you. But if you are a baseball fan, you have a chance to connect with this special book. A wonderful, thoughtful main character, some of the best, most evocative baseball writing I’ve ever read (I am a professional sports writing editor!) and a meticulous grasp of history. Loved the narration by Pinchot. Highly recommend, especially as a companion to the summer months as the season ticks by.

Listening to this audiobook was my first exposure to Thomas Tryon’s work and I wasn’t sure what to expect. The Other had been billed as a horror classic, but what I found as I listened was a carefully constructed world populated by vibrant characters. It wasn’t the biggest page-turner I’ve read and I think it’s more accurately described as “macabre” than outright scary, but there were enough memorable scenes and set pieces that it was easy to keep listening. I was especially impressed by the writing, which was so full of life and emotion, as well as William Dufris’ performance, which was energetic and warm. The novel deftly evokes the mystery and confusion of early adolescence in a rather heartwarming way despite the grisly narrative.

Though I think Jonathan Cecil’s narration is the gold standard for Jeeves books, Frederick Davidson reads this collection with a ton of panache and whimsy. I don’t think I need to say much about the stories themselves; they are somehow still hilarious more than 100 years after they were first published. The audio quality is perhaps a little fuzzy but once you get used to it, it’s not a problem. Definitely recommend for Jeeves and Wooster fans new and old.

There’s simply nobody better at reading Tolkien aloud than Rob Inglis. He knows the right tone for every moment; from the descriptions of the Shire’s pastoral beauty to the horrors of Gollum’s cave, Gandalf’s invocations of Middle-earth’s mystical past and the fury and chaos of battle, every word is perfectly spoken. Special mention should be given to his energetic and tuneful performance of The Hobbit’s songs, which serve bring the story and world to life even more. The only thing better is his reading of the LOTR trilogy.
