Interesting and complex characters. Plenty of twists and turns. Plan to spend two or three hours at a time reading this series.

Correctable narration
Revisado: 04-23-24
Excellent story but, the narration is bad at 1.0. Adjust your narration speed to 1.2 and it corrects the problem. Thoroughly enjoyable after that correction, as are all the titles by this author.

A trip back into pre-war Singapore
Revisado: 04-02-22
An Asian woman is found dead in the dock area. Not an unusual event in pre-war Singapore nor one the colonial authorities wish to worry about but this one leads to a trail of espionage, betrayal, murder and treason. More Max Betancourt please!

Historia
The 29-day battle to liberate Manila resulted in the catastrophic destruction of the city and a rampage by Japanese forces that brutalized the civilian population. Landmarks were demolished, houses were torched, suspected resistance fighters were tortured and killed, countless women were raped, and their husbands and children were murdered. American troops had no choice but to battle the enemy, floor by floor and even room by room, through schools, hospitals, and even sports stadiums. In the end, an estimated 100,000 civilians lost their lives in the massacre.

Detailed review of the Battle of Manila
Revisado: 04-29-20
The month-long, Battle for Manila in early 1945, unwanted by supreme commanders on both sides, resulted in devastation and atrocities unmatched in the Pacific War. Caught between the advancing American troops and the trapped and rampaging Japanese Marines, the civilian population of Manila suffered over 100,000 deaths. Having lived in the Malate section of Manila fifty years later, Scott's description of the battle brought to my mind vivid images of death and destruction to a familiar but now peaceful and vibrant urban area of the city. This is a battle that would not have been fought had certain Japanese leaders followed orders and withdrawn from the city thus leaving an open city as ordered by their distant commander. The events of this battle have left a legacy that affects Philippine society to this day. This topic and book should be required reading for any student of Philippine history or the Pacific War.

Behind Japanese Lines has a great deal to say about the relations with the Filipinos and about the problems of dealing with and fighting the Hukbalahaps, the communist guerrillas or, indeed, in opposing the Japanese. This book adds considerable insights into the significance of guerrilla warfare as it relates to modern warfare in general

First-hand account of guerrilla war on Luzon
Revisado: 07-11-17
An interesting account of one American's experience on Luzon in the Philippines following the American surrender in 1942. With little or no support from the United States, these Americans and their Filipino comrades-in-arms carried on the fight against the Japanese for three years in whatever capacity they could. Having been stationed on Luzon for several years, I am familiar with many of the places where these events took place. The narrative would have been much easier to listen to had the reader been given coaching on the proper pronunciation of Philippine words and place names. The author's closing evaluation of the post-war treatment of the Philippines in general and Filipino soldiers by the United States is, in my opinion, quite accurate. Overall an enjoyable read.
