Historia
A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary’s mission to Winter, an unknown alien world whose inhabitants can choose—and change—their gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter’s inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so, he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters.

A Perfectly Sketched Universe
Revisado: 04-30-25
This novel illustrates why LeGuin is one of America’s greatest writers. No “sci-fi” or “female” qualifiers. Just a great writer. Drawing on her father’s career as an anthropologist, she creates a detailed anthropology of another time, another planet, and another race — so detailed as to leave the reader feeling as though she has just scratched the surface. That thought experiment provokes metaphors and comparisons to our own times in more ways than even she perhaps contemplated. Couch’s performance was good, not great, and I could have done without the normative “LeGuin should have done these things instead” portions of the Afterword to this 2019 version. That seemed gratuitous politically slanted, and often redundant. I suspect that the Afterword will not age nearly as well as the brilliant novel itself has.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

A powerful reimagining of Huckleberry Finn from his companion’s perspective, with a couple of sharp left turns and violations of the space-time continuum by way of literary license.

Set in an addicts' halfway house and a tennis academy, and featuring the most endearingly screwed-up family to come along in recent fiction, Infinite Jest explores essential questions about what entertainment is and why it has come to so dominate our lives; about how our desire for entertainment affects our need to connect with other people; and about what the pleasures we choose say about who we are.

Wasted Space, Missed Opportunity
Revisado: 02-20-25
I say “over,” you say “rated.” Somewhere in this self-important, pretentious mess may be a tight, engaging novel but it would take hacking away at least one-third of it. To be sure, it has long sections of exceptionally well-written prose. But so much of it is so confusing and needlessly asks so much of the reader as to be pointless, if not incomprehensible. Excellent narration. Terribly overblown and overrated IMHO.

The hero of John Kennedy Toole's incomparable, Pultizer Prize–winning comic classic is one Ignatius J. Reilly, an obese, self-absorbed, hapless Don Quixote of the French Quarter, whose half-hearted attempts at employment lead to a series of wacky adventures among the lower denizens of New Orleans.

Astounding in so many ways. Hilarious from start to finish. A Unfortunately, the narrative peformance is extremely lame and downright annoying in several places throughout.

Mediocre Romantic Fiction Masquering as Historical Novel

So much in here has absolutely no basis in reality. The rest is just Hallmark garble and 1960s formulaic, telegraphed suspense that is sheer nonsense.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Not Her Best, and Not His
Revisado: 10-25-24
Starts out promising, and has some nice moments of dramatic tension through the first third or so. Then kind of meanders before fizzling out. The story might be worth 4 stars but I found Tom Hanks’ narration or performance or whatever he was going for at any given moment to be bizarre and confusing and off-putting. It really surprised me because I am such a big of his as well as of Patchett’s. Overall, disappointing.

One of my favorite books, re-read after more than 40 years. Excellent writing, fascinating story, and efficient character development given its relatively short length. The narration is fine, but I wish that an Englishman able to adopt an American accent had been chosen.

It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.
