Historia
New York Times best-selling author Olen Steinhauer's sweeping espionage audiobook traces the rise and fall of a domestic left-wing terrorist group. Told from the individual perspectives of an FBI agent, an undercover agent within the group, a convert to the terrorist organization, and a writer on the edges of the whole affair, The Middleman is another tightly wound thriller and an intimate exploration of the people behind the politics, from a master of suspense.

Great conspiracy story, but c’mon…
Revisado: 03-01-25
So many characters and such an extremely convoluted plotline! And the premise - that hundreds of young people would drop everything to join a movement with an unknown goal - really stretches credulity beyond the breaking point. However, if you’re into conspiracy stories, you’ll probably love it. Also the narrator was very consistent and appropriately cynical, which kept me listening.

Historia
The former Confederate states have continually mythologized the South's defeat to the North, depicting the Civil War as unnecessary, or as a fight over states' Constitutional rights, or as a David v. Goliath struggle in which the North waged "total war" over an underdog South. In The Myth of the Lost Cause, historian Edward Bonekemper deconstructs this multi-faceted myth, revealing the truth about the war that nearly tore the nation apart 150 years ago.

Debunking at its best
Revisado: 02-12-25
Debunking of old myths is so welcome, especially the Godlike mythologizing of Robert E. Lee, and negative stories about Grant.

The truth of it

As frustrating as it was sometimes, I loved the slow - and painful - revelation of the truth. The emotional logic behind the characters’ behaviors and motivations was flawless.

Historia
Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita is one of the most beloved novels ever. And yet, very few of its readers know that the subject of the novel was inspired by a real-life case: the 1948 abduction of 11-year-old Sally Horner. Weaving together suspenseful crime narrative, cultural and social history, and literary investigation, The Real Lolita tells Sally Horner’s full story for the first time. Sarah Weinman uncovers how much Nabokov knew of the Sally Horner case and the efforts he took to disguise that knowledge during the process of writing and publishing Lolita.

The parallels are striking, but…
Revisado: 10-08-24
…there were several other cases that somewhat paralleled the plot and story of Lolita. Nabokov had been working on the novel that became Lolita for decades before he read about Sally Horner and the pedophile who abducted her. Still, the author writes in depth about Nabokov’s struggle to write and publish the novel, and the sad story of Sally Horner. So it’s worth reading from that standpoint.

All the twists and the characters- Matilda and Hightower most memorable.
Revisado: 06-26-24
Really entertaining - enjoyed Matilda, even though her detection skills were hard to believe, especially for a 14-year-old. I also liked the interactions between Jack and Hightower and all the crazy scrapes that they got into.

Really good, although I lost the timeline about 3/4 of the way through with the defense of Moscow, then suddenly we were at Pearl Harbor. Also, it’s a bit skimpy on developments in Japan, compared to German invasion of Russia.
