MC is a moron
Revisado: 04-13-25
I started reading this book and then found out the issue/secret of the MC about her vision. I have the same issue and am now blind. Reading about a character going through a diagnosis that effected me , I thought would be interesting. It was not. I grew up after knowing what was going to happen in my own life. This MC grew horny. She is using sex to escape her problem, which is a disappointment to someone that knows what really happens when you know your future will be dark. This plot is too focussed on the MC's sexual desire. The trauma and murder that is the real plot line is secondary, but I am not sure why.
I know that going blind made me make decisions for my future. In this book the future is the next time the MC can have a climax or see a man naked. It does a disservice to persons dealing with vision loss. This author uses an issue that changes the course of a life, to justify the next moment for sex. It's not that easy .
Also, the MC seems to question the occult, when she is speaking to a living character that "fell" out of a novel. This makes no sense. I found her really stupid and nothing much to have 3 men crazy for her.
The narrator is great and I would listen to anything she reads. This book was not for me, because the issue is close to home. The series might work for others.

Very Slow
Revisado: 04-10-25
I really wanted to like this book, but it is a little too slow. I figured out a lot of the important points way before the MC. I know a first book in a series sets up the characters, but this does not have a lot of interesting people to hold my focus. I put it down and stop it for hours, without a desire to get back to it, like I do with books that are exciting.
The story is interesting, but the dialogue is flat and lacks wit. There is also a lot of repeating of the same things. I got sick of references to the "blue bottle" everytime someone wants to know/understand something. How about just thinking and using your brain....not with this MC.
There is also a lot of little irrelevant details that do nothing to move the story along. The 35 yr old MC is depending on a 16 yr old....wow! This part of the storyline had me confused.
The narrator is okay, but not great. She tries and is good wit the Irish accent, but the women sound very alike.
Overall, this book is okay and I am thankful it was free. I don't think I am going to continue with the series, as there's nothing new or exciting in the plot that is not done better in other books. A good editor would have tightened up the plot, which is what this book really needed.

Esther is too stupid
Revisado: 04-01-25
This story is very interesting. The only issue is that the main female character is a stupid hot mess.
It is easier believing that the supernatural things are true, but that a sane police officer can find anything attractive about Esther is the hardest thing to believe. She seems crazy and unlikeable.
In this book the character of Lucky is charming and I would love it if he has his own series. I have to give up on this series thogh, as I can't stand the MF. Because of her stupidity the plot has to move slowly and all things explained in painful detail.
I really love the dramatized version of books and that was the only reason I tried this. The first two books were free, but I would not pay for the remainder of the series, as it's not worth it due to the annoying MF. Many reviewers don't have a problem with her, so try the first two books and if you can do it, then go ahead. I just can't.....

Terrible Main Character
Revisado: 03-02-25
The female MC was obnoxious and very foolish. I have to like a character to really enjoy the book.
I stopped caring half way through, so just skimmed to the end.
Not going to continue with the series, as it more of the same.
Good narrator and would love moare books read by her.

Peter is an Idiot
Revisado: 01-31-25
I started to get sick of Peter's failures and stupidity in book 5. the only...and I mean the only reason I have stuck with this series is the narrator. He is magnificent. I don't care what is in the plot, or who is dying, I just want to hear this great voice.
The story is just ridiculous. This is why people lose faith in policing...all of them are written as losers that can't get anything right.
Nightingale is the best, but not in much of the book. The author wastes time with the failure of a rookie "cop" that spends more time flat out on the street, grass, van floor, marble foyer, back of a car, you name it peter has fallen on his face while attempting success, but having to depend on Nightingale to save him.
Many reviewers seem to love this series, and for some things I can understand. It is so disappointing to finally have the NC of a book be mixed race (like me) and be such a screw up. I really hoped for better.
Get this book for the narrator , you won't be disappointed, but not for the story, which will make a sane person cry.

Dislikeable MC
Revisado: 12-01-24
I have tried to like the main character, but I just can't. I know he has issues and is really smart, but I hate how little regard he has for DCI Jones. And , I really hate the way a female officer is treated in this series. The MC shows more love for his dog , than the woman who's life he is wrecking. both her personal and professional life is in shambles for 1 man. I am not sure what this says about her...but it's how the author thinks a woman will behave.
The narrator is one of my favorites and why I listened to the series. If not for him, I would have given up after book one.
This is an okay listen, but difficult if you are a female reader. At almost every turn I kept thinking, what is this woman doing with such a jerk? Still don't have the answer.

Writing for a local online magazine, Nora investigates the curious death of socialite Lola Grainger. Though it was deemed an accident, Nora suspects foul play. And it seems that her cat does too. Apparently, Nick used to belong to a P.I. who disappeared while investigating Lola Grainger's death. The coincidence is spooky, but not as spooky as the clues Nick spells out for her with Scrabble letters - clues that lead her down an increasingly dangerous path.

Too Stupid
Revisado: 11-28-24
The idea of this book was a good start. The MC is too stupid for me to continue reading. The cat is smarter than her and that should be where any reader stops!
The narrator does not do this book any favors. The way the MC asks questions and wants help, then doesn't take it. All the insta-love between the MC and "hunk" detective make the plot seem like a Hallmark movie. I enjoy a cozy that is quirky and charming, but this is none of those things. There are much better books , so skip this one.

Everything is falling apart. I've been cursed with the ability to catch glimpses of the future. It's a power which Lukas despises but it's one that I can't seem to get rid of. I'm also in trouble at work. Somebody else is claiming that they are the one true phoenix and that my entire existence is built on lies. At least I have a cold case to investigate which will take my mind off my woes. Investigating the mysterious disappearance of an entrepreneurial gremlin is bound to keep me busy and focused—and surely nothing else is going to go wrong and nobody is going to get hurt.

Too Obnoxious
Revisado: 11-09-24
I have read the whole series. I tried to like the heroine, but I just can't. Why do authors think it has to be a likeable character or a strong one. Why can't it be both. Every time I think Emma might be likeable, she acts like an immature child or a rude , arrogant b***h. I kept asking myself why Lucas could be so devoted, but he's a vampire, so maybe a pulse is all it takes?!?
I bought this book because of the narrator. She is just excellent. I love her work on every book she narrates. The other reason to listen to this book is for the supporting characters. The great supporting "cast" makes Emma even more disappointing. The others can be funny/pleasant and strong (see Buffy). Emma is the real disaster of this series.
The Emma character is a stereotype of a childish, independant woman that thinks taking help is asign of weakness, even from someone that loves you. This is a bigger social problem reflected in this book series. Powerful women can't do it all, but in this bookEmma gets stronger with every resurrection, but not any wiser. That's the real shame in the writing.

Idiot Heroine
Revisado: 11-04-24
I love mysteries, but this was terrible. The way the murder was committed is interesting, but that is it.
A few of the harsh ( and realistic) reviews have said the lead is selfish and into her own drama...and they are absolutely correct. The thing I can't understand are the good reviews. I can't imagine anyone thinking this story , which not only has an unlikeable heroine, but the facts of the case are repeated over and over again. I also can't understand why the police officer Paul finds anything interesting about her. She obviously thinks he either can't or won't do his job, so she keeps inserting herself into the case. If I were him, I would be insulted.
The narrator is good and the only really good thing about the audio book. Everything else gets progressively more awful as the book goes along. I am just glad it was a free listen, or I would be even more upset about wasting money on top of the time. Give this a pass, as there is much better out there!

Disappointing Heroine
Revisado: 09-05-24
This story is very original. The books giving clues was exciting. Everything else is old.
The well educated woman , that is stupid about life/Heroine is so beautiful every man wants her and a mystery that only she can solve!
The narrator is okay, but not great. The male voices sound like women and it is really hard to tell one from the next.
I think the last straw was her going to look for a clue in a dirty barn, wearing an vintage party dress., while riding her mother's bicycle.
It's a 5 books series, so I'll keep going to see if it gets better
