Good story, subpar narration
Revisado: 02-02-24
The story was fine, but the narrator and his choice of voices was annoying. Whether it was his voice for strenuous activity or his droning female sniveling “accent” it was a slog to listen to.

It’s rare that I listen/ read something more than once. It’s unprecedented that I would do so numerous times. This story though is a deal breaker. I just want more!

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Historia
Southern food is integral to the American culinary tradition, yet the question of who "owns" it is one of the most provocative touchpoints in our ongoing struggles over race. In this unique memoir, culinary historian Michael W. Twitty takes listeners to the white-hot center of this fight, tracing the roots of his own family and the charged politics surrounding the origins of soul food, barbecue, and all Southern cuisine.

Not what I expected...
Revisado: 01-16-19
This book was so much more! While I would not exactly call it a “cooking” book. I can understand why it won the James Beard award. Not only did the author’s reading grant more depth to the narrative than an actor/ narrator could have, Mr Twitty’s passion for the material slammed his reality home to me.
Everyone should listen or read this book to gain insight (if it isn’t your heritage) into what the descendants of the enslaved deal with historically and emotionally.
Thank you sir for giving me a taste of your life.

Historia
Acclaimed actress Claire Danes burnishes an epic story of heroes, gods, and monsters in a groundbreaking translation of The Odyssey, the first great adventure story in the Western literary tradition. When the wily warrior-king Odysseus sets off for home after the Trojan War, he doesn’t realize this simple undertaking will become a perilous journey of 10 years. Beset at every turn, he encounters obstacles, detours, and temptations—both supernatural and human—while his wife Penelope fends off would-be suitors desperate to take the throne.

Slow start!
Revisado: 12-14-18
The introduction is over an hour...this almost got me to the point of quitting and returning the purchase. Fortunately, I slogged through it. Ms Danes has a pleasant voice, but there was no differentiation between the character voices (male or female) so at times it was challenging to be aware of what characters had lines of dialogue.
All that noted it was well worth my time to listen.

Historia
Sixty-nine-year-old Arthur Pepper lives a simple life. He gets out of bed at precisely 7:30 a.m., just as he did when his wife, Miriam, was alive. He dresses in the same gray slacks and mustard sweater-vest; waters his fern, Frederica; and heads out to his garden. But on the one-year anniversary of Miriam's death, something changes. Sorting through Miriam's possessions, Arthur finds an exquisite gold charm bracelet he's never seen before.

I made it two hours in and finally had to stop. It’s just a bunch of sentences put together without any character development. The narrator was fine, but two hours in the story wasn’t coming together. Horrible!!!
