Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

Interesting content, long-winded execution.

I was excited about the storyline and learning more about an angle and a period of slavery in America that’s not often discussed. Unfortunately the editor should have done a better job at cutting overly talkative and redundant dialog. Less is more, in so many ways, regardless of the importance of the subject matter.

Historia
The Mercy of Thin Air entwines two heartbreaking and redemptive love stories that echo across three generations and culminates in a finish that will leave readers breathless. It is a poignant and brilliant first novel that beautifully captures the nature of love and shows how it transcends all barriers, even death.

One of my all time favorites
Revisado: 01-02-22
This novel is an absolute gem. The lyrical writing, the slowly unraveled secrets, the way the story develops and becomes multifaceted with an ease that is as visceral as the protagonist. I don’t read books twice. But The Mercy of Thin Air is an exception. I pull it out and listen to it as soon as I’ve forgotten the details. Because then I can enjoy it like it’s new again. For me, this novel sits on the same top shelf as The Time Traveler’s Wife, Peony In Love, and Call Me By Your Name. It’s the way it transports you into another world and keeps you there, both in smiles and in tears. It should be bigger. Much bigger, out there, than it is.
