Historia
The young Monica Madden cries for two days before her marriage to Edmund Widdowson; the ensuing claustrophobia, which opens the door for the more desirable Bevis, contrasts with Rhoda's independence - yet Rhoda's own principles are tested when she falls in love rather by accident.... The Odd Women is a remarkable book, ultimately optimistic in its hope for a societal shift that will benefit both men and women alike.

First, Juliet Stevenson. She could read an ingredient list and I would listen! As for the story, incredible! So timely, such a current topic so many years later. Men and women, love and marriage, what does it mean? What does it not mean?

Historia
On the island of Sicily amid the Peloponnesian War, the Syracusans have figured out what to do with the surviving Athenians who had the gall to invade their city: they’ve herded the sorry prisoners of war into a rock quarry and left them to rot. Looking for a way to pass the time, Lampo and Gelon, two unemployed potters with a soft spot for poetry and drink, head down into the quarry to feed the Athenians if, and only if, they can manage a few choice lines from their great playwright Euripides. Before long, the two mates hatch a plan to direct a full-blown production of Medea.

I see why it’s nominated for awards. Excellent story, cheekily narrated, lyrically written. Love, loss, friendship, humor, honor and hope. I loved it all.

Excellent in-depth look at the writings of some of the best French authors. I’ve wanted to understand these novels but didn’t really know what to look for. I will read Madame Bovary and The Plague again, but with new eyes. I feel better prepared for Proust and Balzac. A truly fantastic audio course

Terrifying how fast things can change
Revisado: 11-15-24
Somber narration. Writing in a way that captures how our minds may remember our last moments before a drama or trauma unfolds. Snapshots of faces, snippets of conversation, flashbacks of opportunities lost. Pacey and very well written!

Flat character development and lackluster narration. But still a good story.
Revisado: 10-07-24
Narrator reads the book but I wouldn’t say it was a narration. The story was also good but the writing was very surface. I wish there had been more character development. I’m glad I listened as this book has been in my shelf for a while. I would recommend reading it and skipping the audio book.

Worth the slow start
Revisado: 08-08-24
I came to this novel once I finished Sansom’s Shardlake series. For that reason, it took some time to become invested in this story as it’s nothing like Shardlake. However the writing was just as good so I persevered. So glad I did! I really enjoyed it. Learning about the Franco regime was quite eye opening.

Fiction was never so real!
Revisado: 08-02-24
Where to even begin?? This is not an easy listen, but it is an important one. In our current us/them, up/down, black/white society where there is little patience for grey area and nuance, this is a story of a narrator who has no choice but to examine the grey area and the nuance. In doing so, she asks the questions that prompt our examination as well. Vivid descriptions of everything from delicate food at family gatherings to the heartbreak of wartime atrocities. Just listen to it!

Historia
Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

I’m glad I decided to enjoy this book via audio. It really made the story come to life with the character’s voices all delivered by different actors. The mini surprise near the end was an interesting touch. Excellent writing and for anyone familiar with 70s bands, nothing in the story seemed to be a stretch.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Why did I wait so long?!
Revisado: 01-26-24
Rosamund Pike was a great narrator. No distractingly different voices to distinguish the characters. Just enough to make it interesting. Such a great story. I’ve read Sense and Sensibility, which was good, but I like this one better. Now I see what all the hubbub over Darcy was about.
