Hands down….the WORST book of the series

There was a time, when I’d both read & recommend Gregg the Orphan X series to other Audible “reader/listeners.”
Sadly, that time has long since come and gone.

The series’ characters, locations and “canon” has been well developed and is supported by a fan base….
BUT…
If you don’t give the characters anything to do or present them with legitimate conflict, you wind up with books like this one OR it’s predecessor “Prodigal Son.”

They’re both filled with endless monologues, unnecessary supposition & overindulgent descriptions of individual behaviors or environmental surroundings.
Hurwitz paints a beautiful, detailed picture of “what is going on”, but forgets to include anything worthy of an audience’s attention or $.

There’s nothing here worthy of the BEST in this series and a LOT of plot points that clearly violate Orphan X’s 10 commandments…

Reaper is another great addition to the series

Upon it’s release, I finished “Reaper” in a non-stop 13hr sitting and did it all over again the next day.
-I’ve re-read or re-listened to each book of the Cradle series, more times than I can count, which is unusual for me.

-I HATE to rewatch movies & until Cradle, I’d NEVER re-listened/reread a book in my 4 decades on earth. Once I’ve experienced a book/movie, I have NO desire or patience to go through it again….

UNTIL CRADLE!

Cradle is like an addiction for me. The story remains strong & entertaining for me, despite having listened to it repetitively. I discover some new bit of information or detail with each & every listen.
——
What’s so great about the series?
The characters are relatable, their individual storylines are entertaining and the suspense keeps you engaged in the plot as it develops…

AND most important of all?!?
Travis Baldree is WAY more than a narrator, as his voice work brings EVERY character to life.

Thanks to Baldree’s vocal talents, the characters, their insecurities, inner struggles, conflicts and the world in which they live comes ALIVE!
The man is UNBELIEVABLY talented!

Now….It’s very common for the writer of ANY popular series’ get into the “fan service” habit.
THANKFULLY, in the Cradle series, Mr. Wight stays free & clear of such habits. Meaning, anything can happen to anybody at anytime, anyplace & anywhere.
Foreshadowing exists, but it doesn’t make the surrounding circumstances or the outcome of an “expected” event predictable or pre-ordained.

As an example, I “predicted” the big “twist” long ago, still the circumstances and story surrounding the “twist” remained original & unexpected.

Each volume of Cradle remains free & independent, with every plot point original in one way or another.
You love the story you get, because it’s not the story you expected, predicted or “rooted” for, it’s original.

A good example of this would be the storyline of a certain purple mind-spirit. No fan service here. Very unexpected direction.

In the meantime, like the rest of us, I’m back to the waiting game, eagerly anticipating the next volume in the series.

Time to listen to Reaper again!

Fantastic start to a series.

Totally different energy than the Dempsey/Task force ember series and all the better for it!

Only book series I've EVER read, re-read & read AGAIN. From book #1, "Unsouled" I was hooked and immediately listened straight thru every title to Bloodlines.
Wight & Baldree make it easy to invest in the characters & care about their0 plight!

I really enjoyed the initial concept, attention to 80’s detail & storyline. However, as the book continued, the concept & story became “thin.”
It’s an OUTSTANDING short story, stuffed with unnecessary “filler” & stretched into what became a weak novel.
Truthfully, I’m not a writer, so who am I to judge!
I’ve really enjoyed Hendrix’s other work and I liked this concept...but it wore me out!

This book is WAY better than most of your run-of-the-mill zombie apocalypse series. The characters are deep, storylines are crisp and full of surprises. The books can be brutal in describing human suffering and first I wasn’t sure that it was something I could handle. As time went on I grew to understand the purpose behind the descriptive details.
All in all a great series. Make sure you start with the omnibus. You can’t just jump into the series in the middle.

This story and the accompanying narration are perfect for each other. Oliver Wyman nails the characters and his vocalizations are key (along with the writing....of course) in personality development. Without Mr. Wyman I venture to guess this series would not soar like it does. This is a great book and series.
PS: This is at least the 3rd time I’ve listened to the whole series (excluding book #7). I’ve never done that with ANY other books. I’m usually uninterested in “re-listening” to books I’ve already gone through before. This series is well worth the time, money or credit you spend on it!
